My Morning Jacket

[INDIE ROCK] For a band who just released an album called The Waterfall, Lewiston should be the perfect backdrop for an outdoor summer concert. On Wednesday, July 22, My Morning Jacket will come to Artpark, as part of Artpark’s Coors Light Wednesdays concert series, just in time to debut some tunes from their seventh studio album. The Waterfall, which was released on May 4, is the psychedelic-indie-rock band’s first release since their critically acclaimed 2011 album Circuital. With its grooved interludes and tumbling rhythms, the album’s first single, “Spring,” encapsulates the themes alluded to by the symbolism of the waterfall: constant, yet always changing. This is a metaphor for the band itself, too. A My Morning Jacket song is always recognizable as a My Morning Jacket song, yet they’ve refused to repeat themselves. Where 2005’s Z marked a transcendent moment—the band went from your typical alternative bluegrass band to indie gods—the followup, Evil Urges, brought them back down to earth before they took off into space with again on Circuital. The Waterfall returns the group, lead by frontman Jim James, to a more natural footing, with songs that should make perfect sense under a setting sun in Lewiston next week.
