New Riders of the Purple Sage
[ROCK] If you’re a fan of Workingman’s Dead (the album, not the cover band—although it could work either way) then you might enjoy the old-world twang that sometimes crept into the Grateful Dead’s output and certainly informed some of Jerry Garcia’s side projects (Old and In the Way, in particular). New Riders of the Purple Sage embody that same spirit, but the band’s penchant for country music is infused with psychedelic sensibilities, leading to their claim of being, “America’s premier psychedelic cowboy band.” Since the group’s inception in 1969, New Riders’ have had a revolving door membership that reads like a Bay Area Who’s Who, but co-founding guitarist/vocalist Dave Nelson still holds down the fort from the original lineup. Check out some Grateful Dead-related Bar Area music scene history when Nelson and company play at Sportsmen’s Tavern on Sunday July 3 for a 6pm show.
