Steve Miller Band/Peter Frampton

[ROCK] As package tours go, this is a pretty reasonable pairing that should capture a solid cross-section of fans, which is why it’s been held over for another 40 dates after last summer’s run. 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Steve Miller continues to sell out gigs year after year mainly on the strength of material from his 13 million selling Greatest Hits 1974-78, which contains a run of hits so deeply ingrained in our collective consciousness, we couldn’t forget them if we wanted to. Miller brought a bluesy swagger to the early-to-mid 1970s AOR scene that quenched a need unsatisfied by the AM radio sound of the time, though he managed to straddle both FM and AM formats as the decade progressed, earning him a cross section of devotees that haven’t waivered. Frampton, meanwhile, cut his teeth in the British boogie-blues fusion outfit Humble Pie before finding massive stateside success with his landmark live set, Frampton Comes Alive, which sold 8 million copies over here. Another artist to straddle both AM and FM dials in the 1970’s, Frampton’s music is undeniably rooted in blues. Their shared bluesy beginnings will result in a pair of covers midway through Miller’s set (one by Freddie King, the other by Elmore James) when they come to Artpark in Lewiston on Tuesday, July 3. Frampton and Miller both make music that evokes a very specific time in pop culture—a time many would love to return to. Perhaps the best we can do is take the music with us. Gates are at 5pm, Frampton goes on at 7pm for an opening set that might just include a Soundgarden cover.
