[SOUL] The words “doom soul” don’t make sense until you hear the sounds of Algiers. Think highly distorted, fuzzy, searing soul music made by four guys from Atlanta. Their gospel-punk power shines in all its glory on their 2015 self-titled Matador Records debut, which is equal parts heavy and hooky, dark and up-lifting. Anyone who is into Motown will find something familiar in Algiers music—frontman Franklin James Fisher’s soulful voice hits on classic soul melodies—but there is a weirdo, experimental side too, with aspects of industrial, noise, and post-punk mixed in throughout. An easy entry point, however, comes from their single “The Underside of Power,” a steaming-hot summertime instant soul classic from their 2017 full length album by the same name. Catch Algiers live on Wednesday, June 20 at Sugar City with local support from Velvet Bethany and Hundred Plus Club.
