The 1975

[NEW WAVE] They’re called The 1975, but their music is decidedly 1980s influenced. They formed in 2002, but didn’t really gain any traction until their 2013 self-titled debut album, which went platinum. Ok, now that we’ve sorted out our decades, it’s kind of a big deal to see this Manchester, England based indie rock band coming to our neck of the woods. And they’ll make the most out of it with a two night stand at the Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls on Tuesday, May 30 and Wednesday, May 31 (and for those paying attention, both major rock radio stations here in Buffalo are presenting the events). The band’s latest album *takes deep breath* I Like it When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It, has in a sense transcended their self titled debut, which drew comparisons to the The Strokes and Phoenix. Instead, I Like It When You Sleep, which front man Matty Healy referred to simply as “art” that “the world needs,” is in fact a bit deeper than their poppy debut, though it’s possible that Healy overstated it just a bit. Case in point, the band’s nine minute long creepy David Lynchian music video for their single “Somebody Else.” The song is a bit more traditionally appetizing for pop fans than the strange first few minutes of the music video, but the substance of the album as a whole is not as shallow as your typical pop record—critical of celebrity culture and the substance abuse that usually comes with it. Live, the band puts on a neon-lit, foggy arena rock show, even when their stage for the night is a medium sized club.
