[DANCE PUNK] Nic Offer and company are baiting us with the preview from the next !!! (Chk Chk Chk) disc, a sinewy groove that dropped on Record Store Day called “All U Writers,” in which we are encouraged to get out our pens (and pencils) and write, get on our horses and ride, etc. It’s not a departure, really, but it does take a decidedly clubby direction for the band which, in it’s difficult-to-believe nearly 20 years has teetered in the electro-organic dance-punk grey area inhabited by most of the DFA Records stable (co-owned by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy). The new single combines a mix of panty-drop-deep and falsetto vocals, covering the funk from both ends of the spectrum with some glitchy word-hash pinging in between. A gooey bass line keeps the whole shebang careening along while a guitar riff reminiscent of strung-out Sly Stone bounces off the top. It’s hot in that depraved, booty-grinding manner that former member John Pugh later capitalized on with his Free Blood project. Performing at Babeville’s 9th Ward on Friday, May 22—six guys, small stage, tiny room, big sweat—!!! will surely give a taste of the new as-yet-untitled full-length, due sooner rather than later, while serving up aging faves like “Slyd,” “Get That Rhythm Right,” and “Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard.” Kopps and Groove Cereal open.
