Golden Gloves Finals
[BOXING] This year’s annual and amateur upstate tournament conclude this Sunday inside Depew’s The Cove is shaping up to be one of the strongest and most intriguing Buffalo Golden Gloves event in some time. For starters, you’ll most likely (bout sheet isn’t final yet) find Olympic alternate Brandon Lynch in what is most likely his last amateur fight. He’s been one of the most polished and dangerous fighters in the tournament for years, fighting out of Jerrick Jones’s gym in Albany, biding his time and travelling overseas to compete in other amateur tournaments for the experience. When he does turn pro—probably this year, I’m hearing he’s already fielding contract offers—he’ll do so as a touted heavyweight prospect. The 6’5” Westchester born and bred pugilist has his sights set on the top. But what’s getting boxing heads truly excited about Sunday will be the middleweight showdown between Rochester’s Wilmont Woods and UB Boxing’s Timi Akeredolu, two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the entire upstate tournament in recent years. The better of three rounds of three minutes is all they need to punch their ticket to the national tournament in Utah. Other can’t-miss bouts include the rising talents of Buffalo fighters Jeffrey Olingou and Akhmed Aliyev.
