Besnard Lakes
[INDIE] Montreal psych-rock enthusiasts Besnard Lakes finally decided to make use of the solitude in the lakes-area of Saskatchewan after which the band is named. Which isn’t to say they haven’t before, but normally central writers Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas only go to the lakes for contemplation, not to make music. This time, they recorded demos there for what became 2015’s A Coliseum Complex Museum before convening with the other four members of the now fleshed-out band at Lasek’s Breakglass Studios (Wolf Parade, Stars, Land of Talk). The resulting album, their fifth, is a meditation on nature. But not without a sense of imagination: both “The Bray Road Beast” and “Golden Lion” conjure fantastical creatures. The tracks are shorter than on past releases, but Lasek’s meticulous production tendencies are still very much the guiding force. Hearing how they translate to a live setting is the real test, which you’ll be able to do on Thursday, April 28 at the Tralf with Turn to Crime.
