[HIP HOP] Alternative hip hop duo Atmosphere put the city of Minneapolis on the rap game map when they released their 1997 debut, Overcast!. MC Slug aka Sean Daley and producer Ant aka Anthony Davis quickly expanded their hip hop empire with the proliferation of their record label, Rhymesayers, which has released records by artists including MF DOOM, Aesop Rock, and Dilated Peoples. Throughout their nearly 30 year existence, Slug has used his subversive lyrics to flip the script on hip hop norms while Ant has kept it grounded with his tasteful, instrumental beats. Their latest album, 2014’s Southsiders, continues that trend. “Put your hands in the air like you really do care,” slings Slug on their single “Kanye West,” subtly attacking what he perceives to be the apathy in hip hop today. Atmosphere comes to the Town Ballroom on Wednesday, April 29 with support from B Dolan, deM, Atlas, and DJ Adatrak.
