[PUNK] The beauty of Palberta is the conveyed impression that they just don’t give a shit if it sounds tight or not. Beyond lo-fi (it’s no-fi), this trio emulates a punk vibe that’s earnestly gritty but balances bits of hilarious parody along the way (the incredulous tone that delivers the line “Hey, Dude, c’mon—you don’t even know where the pharmacy is?!” and the faux-core bark in new Hot on the Beach EP’s opener “The Weekend” are stunning examples). Despite this, when you compare the new EP with the last one—a split with No One and the Somebodies—it’s clear that the ladies of Palberta have devoted time to their craft, branching out rhythmically and experimenting with new textures. This might be the truest local representation of punk we’ve got right now. Tuesday at Milkie’s with Jamie & the Debt and Much Band.
