David Kato and his mother Lydia Mulumba Nalong in Call Me Kuchu.

Reel Queer: Call Me Kuchu

[SCREENING] “Kuchu,” a word of Swahili origin used as a catchall for homosexual, becomes the centerpiece of this documentary that chronicles the fight for gay rights in Uganda, a county that explored making homosexuality punishable by death during filming. Call Me Kuchu follows Uganda’s first openly gay man, David Kato and retired Anglican Bishop Christopher Senyonjo as they battle persecution in their public and private lives.
