Shakey Graves
[ROCK] Folks might recognize Alejandro Rose-Garcia’s rough-hewn mug from his recurring role on Friday Night Lights, but his music, made under the Shakey Graves moniker (an “Indian guide name” given jokingly by friends that stuck) has earned an audience of its own accords, as it should be. Rose-Garcia’s organic, lo-fi blues, infused with plenty of mystic, southern-gothic oddities, is the perfect remedy for pop’s inauthentic sheen. With co-production from Chris Boosahda, his latest, And the War Came, takes the Austin-based troubadour’s sonic palette a few steps forward, but fear not: even with some soothing female vocals (a la Paper Birds’ Esme Patterson) and expanded instrumentation, the disc still has the feel of a sweaty and intimate late night basement session. Say what you will about Texas politics, but when Austin’s mayor proclaimed February 9 as “Shakey Graves Day,” we felt it was a step in the right direction. Shakey Graves comes to the Town Ballroom on Tuesday, March 31 with support from Nikki Lane and David Ramirez.
