The Decemberists
[INDIE ROCK] Portland, Oregon band The Decemberists knew they had truly made a wave in the rock world when they found themselves cartoonized as characters on The Simpsons, joining a club that includes bands like Sigur Rós, the Smashing Pumpkins, the White Stripes, and Spinal Tap. Their appearance on The Simpsons happened during a strategic hiatus for the band, which frontman Colin Meloy told DIYmag was designed to “keep the juices flowing.” His plan worked. In January, the band released their seventh album and first record in four years, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World. The juices are indeed flowing, and still in the same general direction for the band responsible for minor pop-folk masterpieces like their 2005 record Picaresque, and the 2006 follow-up The Crane Wife. Terrible World doesn’t tread new water, but it does float up a familiar stream on the buoyant frame of Meloy’s affectionate songwriting. The Decemberists make their way back to Buffalo to play a show at the UB Center For The Arts on Wednesday, April 1 with special guests, Toronto dream pop band, Alvvays, presented by Funtime Presents.
