The Get Up Kids
[EMO] Among other musical genres, the 1960s gave us folk, psychedelia, and soul. The 1970s—glam, heavy metal, funk, and punk. In the 1980s rap, synth pop, and house were born, followed by rave, grunge, and alt-rock in the 1990s. The 2000s gave us only a few new genres (discounting sub-genres): freak folk, dubstep, grime, and emo. Whether we like it or not, these will be the legacies of this generation. A forefather of one of these genres, emo, is coming to Buffalo this week in the form of The Get Up Kids. The group, which formed in the late 1990s but came to prominence in the early 2000s, are characterized by nearly every aspect that makes the typical emo group emo: Hailing from the Midwest—Kansas City, Missouri—the band makes emotional rock music with a pop-punk edge and confessional-style lyrics. Led by frontman Matt Pryor, the group has accumulated a cult following from records like 1997’s Four Minute Mile and 1999’s Something to Write Home About, two albums that typified emo music for its earliest admirers. After breaking up in 2005, the band reformed in 2008 and have released one album since: 2011’s There Are Rules. On Wednesday, March 25, The Get Up Kids will come to the Waiting Room for a performance with the classic line-up responsible for albums like Four Minute Mile. Pup and Restorations open the show.
