Blackberry Smoke

[ROCK] Atlanta quintet Blackberry Smoke might elicit criticism for a lack of innovative spirit, but Holding All the Roses—the band’s fourth disc and first for Rounder—will burn the twee curls right off the edges of that ‘stache. No, it’s not groundbreaking, except perhaps in its unabashed enthusiasm for what worked so well about Southern rock some 40 years ago. But it’s nearly impossible to argue with the killer hooks oozing from “Let Me Help You (Find the Door)” and “Rock and Roll Again,” and the plot thickens when producer Brendan O’Brien (Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC, Audioslave) shows up to help diversify what’s worked well on past releases, adding additional bite to the title track and “Payback’s a Bitch,” while encouraging some harmony-rich ballads like the Black Crowes-esque “Woman in the Moon.” The results affirm the band’s commitment to the past while going lengths to eliminate any ideas about being a one-trick pony. See for yourself on Sunday, March 22, at Town Ballroom. Doors are at 6pm for an all-ages show.
