The Trews

[ROCK] It’s been about 20 years since Toronto-based quartet The Trews formed in Nova Scotia under the name One I’d Trouser, taken from a line in a Monty Python film. But the band got it’s big break in 2002 when they won Rocksearch, a high profile contest driven by St. Catherines rock station CHTZ, which landed them a solid recording contract. Since then, they’ve created a series of five albums chock-full of strident guitar rock, several of which are Canadian gold sellers, bolstered by front man Colin MacDonald’s reedy pipes and a blue collar sensibility that’s tempered with just the right amount of polish. Along the way they’ve worked with former members of the Black Crowes and Ian McLagan of The Small Faces. In the wake of drummer Sean Dalton’s 2015 departure (now replaced by Gavin Maguire), The Trews released a compilation, Time Capsule, which afforded them some time to get acclimated with a new member and work on new material. The set’s featured new song, “Beautiful and Tragic” is an anthemic toe-tapper that showcases the band’s knack for hitting that sweet spot between power pop and pure rock and roll. They’ll bring that gift to Town Ballroom on Saturday, March 18 for a gig with locals Sixties Future and First Ward.
