Southside Johnny
[ROCK] If there’s a musical tone associated with today’s Jersey Shore scene, it doesn’t sound much like the Stax-influenced sound of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. But 40 years ago, John Lyon (Southside Johnny himself) was considered a pioneer, coming out of the same family of artists that gave us Springsteen. Actually, Springsteen associate “Miami Steve” Van Zandt was a co-founder of the Asbury Jukes and did production work on their early albums. Since then, despite only minor chart action and minimal radio play, the band has maintained a punishing tour schedule and has released music quite regularly. The list of players that have come and gone is staggering, but Lyon remains, releasing Soultime just two years ago and making the most of an enthused cult following. Catch him with the current Jukes lineup at the Bear’s Den in the Seneca Niagara Casino on St. Patty’s day, Friday, March 17 at 8pm.
