[JAM] Phish bassist Mike Gordon returns to Town Ballroom on Tuesday, March 19. And while longtime fans can likely trace musical lineage between his work in Vermont’s most famed musical export (which just had a little shindig down in Mexico last month) and his solo projects, it’s not the slam dunk some might expect. Out on his own with Robert Walter (keyboards), John Kimock (drums), Craig Meyers (percussion, programming) and longtime songwriting partner/guitarist Scott Murawski, Gordon’s music is something more closely likened to the art-pop of Talking Heads. Phish’s whimsical nature is definitely a character in Gordon’s work, but as a solo artist he looks to challenge himself in ways that would likely seem out of place within the context of Phish. 2017’s OGOGO offers a menu rich in upbeat pop tunes soaked in modern electronic gadgetry that still manages plenty of quirk – it’s an admirable balancing act. And, as one might expect from a bass player, it’s a groove-centric sound. Doors are at 7:00 p.m., $29/$33.
