Pinegrove

[AMERICANA] Having gotten swept up in some #metoo accusations of sexual coercion, Pinegrove frontman Evan Stephens Hall agreed to take a year off from touring and, essentially, put his band on hold at a time when the indie world was watching intently: the band, which had already recorded the just recently released Skylight—the impetus for their visit to the Rec Room on Thursday, March 7—was blowing up. It was Hall’s accuser that requested he take the year off, and the band’s decision to honor that request seems a reflection of taking the accusation seriously, especially in light of their heavy buzz at that time. Skylight is Pinegrove gone full-on Americana, and it’s a thoroughly stunning record. Hall and company stretch out, mess with song structures and time signatures while honing in on gorgeous, hair-raising harmonies. Beyond the record’s astonishing beauty, however, is the songwriting. And while Hall’s reflections may sometimes come across as a bit sophomoric, his struggles to understand the tricky terrain of human relationships is telling, especially in light of what happened. Examining expectations, intent vs. perception juxtaposed against his own belief system makes for some compelling tunes – the best that Pinegrove has put out to date. Second chances are not as readily handed out as they once were, but Pinegrove has something worthwhile to offer in music – let’s not cheat ourselves.  Doors are at 7pm with Philly-based Another Michael in the opening slot. 16+, $18.
