The Association

[ROCK] Nearly 52 years ago, The Association kicked off the Monterey Pop Festival, the first true rock festival in the tradition that still carries on today. With a trio of million-plus selling singles that still get plenty of oldies radio airplay (“Cherish,” “Windy” and “Never My Love,” the latter of which is apparently the second most played radio and TV-played song of the 20th Century, according to BMI), The Association remains one of the era’s most fondly remembered bands with its special blend of baroque pop and psychedelia. The version of the band that will appear Saturday, March 9 at North Tonawanda’s Riviera Theatre, features original member and lead guitarist Jules Alexander (who, curiously, was studying meditation in India during the Monterey Pop appearance but returned to the fold shortly thereafter) and early rhythm guitarist, Jim Yester. The rest of the current lineup joined at various times throughout the band’s tenure, most coming on board between The Association’s 1979 reformation, after briefly disbanding the year before, and the mid-1980s. Prepare for an evening of romantic nostalgia—show time is 8pm, tickets are $29-$39.
