Maceo Parker

[FUNK] Maceo Parker is the self-proclaimed “funkiest saxophonist on the planet” and he’s adopted that title, arguably, since James Brown discovered him. In his book, appropriately titled 98% Funky Stuff the now 74-year-old musician talks about how the Godfather of Soul discovered him and his brother, drummer Melvin Parker in a North Carolina nightclub in 1963. This launched Maceo Parker’s illustrious career as sax player for Brown, as well as Parliament Funkadelic, Prince, Dave Matthews Band, Ani DiFranco, De La Soul, 10,000 Maniacs and many others. As bandleader, Parker has released many albums including 1970’s Doing Their Own Thing (as Maceo & All the King’s Men), 1991’s Mo’ Roots, and his 2012 album Soul Classics. In 2014, Parker was portrayed by comedian Craig Robinson in the James Brown biopic Get On Up, which starred Chadwick Boseman as Brown. Parker, who is currently on tour in support of his latest album, Roots Revisited, comes to the Buffalo State Performing Arts Center on Friday, February 24.
