Strange Allure Volume 8: Octo Octa
[TECHNO] Fresh off of the announcement that she’s been added to this year’s edition of Detroit’s Movement Festival—considered by some to be the zenith of electronic music, specifically techno—IDM producer Octo Octa will come to Buffalo for a DJ set as part of the Strange Allure party series this Saturday, February 18. Known for her mind-altering techno sets (for a great intro, check her out on the Beats in Space podcast, #870), Octo Octa aka Maya Bouldry-Morrison has had a career and life defining couple of years. Not only has the Brooklyn-based artist landed some important gigs such as the Movement Festival feature, done mixes for Thump, Beats in Space, and the Ghostly record label, but she also came out as transgender. She’s named artists like house music’s DJ Sprinkles—another queer and trans producer—as highly influential, and in an interview with Resident Advisor last year said she was also inspired by punk band Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace, another transgender music artist, to become her true self. Her identity has perhaps always been hinted at by her androgynous pseudonym, Octo Octa, but she says since coming out publicly, she’s experienced a wave of positive support and told Red Bull Music: “To be able to be open and out and myself is fantastic.” As usual, the site of the next Strange Allure party remains undisclosed until the day of the event. Location details will be released the day of the show via email for ticket holders and email subscribers. For tickets, ask around. Limited tickets available at door.
