Thursday Night Terrors: They Live

[SCREENING] It’s easy to overlook what a great decade the 1980s was for film horror, primarily because what we remember most from that time are the endless mind-numbing slasher movies spawned by Halloween and Friday the 13th.  Because just about anyone could get a film with horrific elements made in such a ripe market, it was inevitable that some good ones would be made, and those are being highlighted in a new season of Thursday Night Terrors, after programmer Peter Vullo’s successful first series in the fall. Opening the monthly series this week is John Carpenter’s subversive satire They Live (1988), in which we learn that yuppies (remember them?) are really aliens from another planet who have used the techniques of subliminal advertising to lull mankind into becoming complacent slaves. Former wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper stars as a laborer who learns the truth and joins a resistance movement to take back the planet. It’s the movie where he gets to deliver the immediately classic line, “I have come to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I’m all out of bubblegum.” Other films include the underrated Night of the Creeps (1986) on Feb. 23; the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), March 30; from Spain, the Euro Chainsaw ripoff Pieces (1982), April 27; and Stuart Gordon’s berserk Re-Animator (1985) on May 25.
