Peter Asher

[ROCK] As many of our rock heroes enter their later years, the word “legend” gets bandied about all too easily. But Britain’s Peter Asher, now 72, is truly a rock and roll legend, his humble beginnings in the duo Peter and Gordon almost being beside-the-point. It’s his industry pedigree as a manager and producer that shines brightest, leading him to work closely with James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, and Bonnie Raitt in the 1970s and, further diversifying his portfolio, with Cher, 10,000 Maniacs, Mary’s Danish, and Julia Fordham in the decades since. Most recently, he produced the first album of collaborations between Edie Brickell and Steve Martin, Love Has Come For You (Rounder, 2013). In 1995, he was named Senior Vice President at Sony Music, but by the early aughties, Asher was back to management at the helm of Sanctuary Artists Management and Strategic Artists Management. These solo “Musical Memoir” gigs will likely follow a similar pattern to the recent string of duo shows he did with Albert Lee over the summer, featuring a handful of Peter and Gordon songs peppered with covers from throughout rock history – including some from artists he’s managed and produced. Sunday, January 29, at Sportsmen’s Tavern.
