Golden Gloves, First Round

[BOXING] One of the area’s great winter sporting traditions that dates back to the 1930s that not many people know about is the Buffalo Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament. At certain times in Buffalo’s history, the Gloves were held before thousands in the Memorial Auditorium, but this Sunday visitors will have the chance to see men (and often women) from all over upstate’s historically boxing rich in much more intimate setting at Buffalo RiverWorks. The opening round is typically the largest event of the tournament with around 20 fights total, each one scheduled for three rounds. Normally around half of the fighters hail from Western New York, with the balance made up of contestants from a constellation of locales from the Hudson Valley to the Adirondacks to Corning and Syracuse. The event will also mark the first boxing show since the passing of the First Ward’s own Irish Jackie Donnelly, who once mentored the aspiring welterweight turned educator, boxing coach and Gloves organizer Don Patterson.
