It is a Buffalonian’s dream to be able to eat pizza for every meal. We stand by our dough, our cheese, and our toppings of choice. We all have our favorites and it’s a never-ending debate on who has the best pie. While Buffalo is mostly known for chicken wings, pizza takes a close second in the running for favorite foods in the Nickel City. With pizza joints on every street corner it’s hard to resist this saucy temptress. There is one man who has set out to prove that his love affair with pizza is eternal. Sexy Slices, also known by his followers as “Sexy” or “Mr. Slices,” is a greasy (in a good way) operation out to prove where Buffalo’s best pizza comes from.
It’s a weekly decision for most of us in the 716: which pizzeria will it be this week? Just like everybody else, Sexy has his go-to slice. Contrary to popular belief, Slices enjoys grabbing a piece from Mr. Pizza. “I’ve learned people are very attached to their opinions on pizza,” says Mr. Slices. “They hit the money for me.” One specific pizza takes him back to his childhood every time, however, Lock City in Lockport. “Hard to replace a childhood favorite,” he says. It may not look like it, but Mr. Slices enjoys all types of Buffalo cuisine. “Black Sheep is my current favorite restaurant in Buffalo, and they’ve solidified that spot time and time again… and on-the-go, got to give a shootout to Lloyd’s nachos. Have mercy!”
For the consistency in his reviews, Slices sticks to the classic cheese and pepperoni as his topping; however, when he’s enjoying a slice for pleasure he prefers sausage and hot peppers. “I’ve never gotten too weird,” he says. “You can get pretty freaky with your order at a lot of Buffalo joints.” Besides toppings there is plenty more to measure when you’re judging pizza, but above all, it comes down to the crust. “The boilerplate Buffalo pizza can get a little ‘Wonder Bread-ish,’ and some New York Style pizza is crackery; It’s got to have an elastic pull and a springy chew without being too fluffy,” says Mr. Slices. First impressions are another important factor of a good slice: is the crust golden brown, is the cheese properly caramelized, are the herbs visible on the pizza? Mr. Slices admits that “9 out of 10 times, you know you’ve got good slices the moment you open the box… Picasso’s hands down has had the best initial ‘wow’ factor of any of the slices I’ve eaten.”
Foodies of all sorts can find their favorites amongst Sexy Slice’s reviews. His instagram page is full of glistening shots of all the pieces he has enjoyed. As his instagram bio states: “I pass eternal judgment on Buffalo’s pizzerias so you don’t have to.” You never know, his next review might be your new favorite.
