Paul McCartney to Play Buffalo for the First Time Ever

After nearly 60 years as a professional musician, Paul McCartney’s career is starting to pick up some steam. He has just announced that he will play his first ever solo show in Buffalo, on October 22 at the First Niagara Center. Is this bad news for all of you who bought tickets to his Toronto show a week earlier? Odds are you’ll probably go to both.

Unlike the Rolling Stones, who announced their recent Western New York appearance half a year before they hit town, McCartney surprised everyone by booking such a major show less than two months in advance. And he’ll be here one day after he plays in Detroit, which is certainly asking a lot of his road crew.

Presumably Paulie—sorry, Sir Paul—will be shaking up his recent set list a bit to include some songs from Tug of War and Pipes of Peace, his two early-80s albums that are being released in deluxe new editions on October 2. Both albums were produced by George Martin and are filled with tunes that would be great to hear live: “Say Say Say,” “Take It Away,” “Ballroom Dancing,” and certainly the majestic “Tug of War.” The only song from either album that he has played live in recent years has been the John Lennon tribute “Here Today,” and why he’s been slighting two of his strongest solo albums is anyone’s guess.

Not that he doesn’t otherwise have a tremendous body of work to draw from. His three-hour shows of late have been heavy on Beatles songs, which is likely to annoy no one. Far from grinding the shows out, McCartney has been willing to rework his material, just as he’s shown himself eager to work with other artists, most recently Kanye West.

Tickets go on sale Monday (August 31). They’re not likely to be cheap, but this will be one to break out the credit card for.
