As local favorites the Tragically Hip prepare to call it a day due to frontman Gord Downie’s terminal brain cancer diagnosis, Buffalonians can spend one last night with the band as their Saturday, August 20 concert in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario will be simulcast in Larkin Square. With the aid of beer from Community Beer Works and plenty of giant video screens, fans can watch the concert for a small fee of $10, a portion of which benefits the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research. This is a 21+ event.  Summer Cider Festival V

Also on August 20, Blackbird Cider Works presents Summer Cider Festival V at their cidery in Barker. While the event is free, which allows guests to enjoy live music and purchase food and glasses of cider, a portion of the event is ticketed, which includes tasting packages that allow you to sample an exciting collection of unique ciders including rare and experimental ciders. The event runs noon-6pm and will feature, in addition to Blackbird, ciders from Original Sin, McKenzie’s Hard Cider, and BlackMan Cider Company.  Kolsch Day at 42 North

Ring in Kolsch Day with 42 North Brewing on Sunday, August 21 in true Cologne style by celebrating with many a pint of their Nelson Sauvin Kolsch. During the Kölsch Day event, their Nelson Sauvin will be served in traditional stange glassware and customer’s glasses will be replenished by tap keepers until they say when, as is customary in Cologne. German music favs the Auslanders will take to the stage in the biergarten (weather permitting) 3-7pm and the kitchen at 42 North, Root’s Kitchen, will have a special German-themed menu for the event.  The taproom opens at noon and the Kolsch Day event begins at 2pm and runs through 8pm.  


 Beach Beer Festival 
Saturday Aug. 20, 3-6pm, Woodlawn Beach State Park, 3580 Lakeshore Rd, Woodlawn

Combine your love of local craft beer and the beach at Buffalo’s Beach Beer Festival, presented by Consumer’s Beverage and Taptrails, the area’s only beer fest on the sand. Over 20 breweries will be on hand pouring their crafted wares, including local brewers Buffalo Brewing Company, Flying Bison, Resurgence Brewing, Rusty Nickel and Four Mile Brewing, breweries from north of the border like Flying Monkeys, Nickel Brook, and Muskoka, and regional outfits like Brooklyn, Empire, and Great Lakes. Admission also includes parking and additional admission to the Labatt’s Beach Bash ($15 value), where guests can enjoy DJs and bands during the festival.
