Engine No. 22, 1522 Broadway, was built from 1890 to 1891 and designed in a Romanesque Revival style by August C. Esenwein. It is still a firehouse to this day, and is the city’s second oldest still in use, behind Engine No. 19 (built in 1887) at 209 Forest Avenue. Engine No. 22 predates the majority of buildings still standing in the Broadway/Bailey neighborhood, and may be the oldest surviving Esenwein-designed building in Buffalo.
