The Public’s weekly local music reviews and previews.

 Single:  “Call Me” by brat’ya

Recommended if you like:  Jean Tonique, Max Tundra, Passion Pit

Earlier this month, Alek Ogadzhanov, formerly of Smart House, released the debut track under his new moniker, brat’ya. The single, titled “Call Me” is a bubbly synthpop anthem obviously influenced by pastel-tinged 1980s synth pop music with a dash of disco. The artwork for the single leaves no doubt about the sugary content of the track, portraying what looks like a multi-colored gumball sandwich next to a tall glass of gumballs.

Single:  “Gospel Part II” by The Slums

RIYL:  At The Drive In, Cursive, Glassjaw

Post-hardcore band The Slums dropped the first single from their new record, SORRY. The single, “Gospel Part II” is a well-produced, heavy-hitting tune that builds up some high expectations for the group’s new album, which will see a proper release on April 29 at the Town Ballroom’s Leopard Lounge.

 Single:  “Revenue Streams” by Shuteyes

RIYL:  Roc Marciano, Ka, El P

Buffalo rapper Shuteyes, aka Matt Smith has released a new single titled “Revenue Streams.” The track is the first taste of his upcoming record Opium. “Revenue Streams” is a laid-back, stoned out track with what sounds like effortless rapping from Shuteyes over a meandering, wonky beat punctuated by a lo-fi saxophone vamp. Opium is out this week on Dopecrate records.
