This Week's Public Picks: Uncertain + THIS
The Blackness Project
[DOCUMENTARY] In 2014, documentary filmmaker Whitney Dow’s first installment of The Whiteness Project, comprising 21 interviews filmed in Buffalo, was aired on PBS. The interviewees were all white people, asked to talk about race—specifically, about how they viewed their whiteness. The frank racism and resentment Dow captured was, says Buffalo filmmaker Korey Green (The Forgotten City, The Experience, The Romans), “a little jarring.”

Petros Klampanis
[JAZZ] Petros Klampanis is a Greek bassist and composer who has traveled the world studying classical and jazz music. From his home base of New York, Klampanis has assembled a jazz group to perform his original compositions, including selections from his latest album, Chorma, released last year. Along with a guitarist, drummer, pianist, and string quartet, Klampanis delivers highly evocative jazz arrangements.

First Ward, Sonny Baker, and Deadwolf
[INDIE] Local music fans should be familiar with all three bands on this show. If not, here’s your invitation to check out three great, locally made records released in 2017. First Sonny Baker’s latest, Steady Hands Dead Tired, is seven tracks of mostly uptempo indie rock with some eccentric tendencies that fans of Broken Social Scene should eat right up. Deadwolf’s latest Heavy Heart is straight psychedelic garage rock for fans of Tame Impala or Black Lips.
Chevron Bloom, Little Summer, Velvet Bethany, and Shane Myer
[INDIE] Mohawk Place has a line up of indie rock acts on the experimental side of things lined up for this Saturday, February 10. Chevron Bloom takes the top spot and comes with support Little Summer, Velvet Bethany, and Shane Myer.
Buffalo State Alumni Artists
Marilyn Manson
[ROCK] This year marks the 20th anniversary of one of Marilyn Manson’s most iconic records, Mechanical Animals. Whether you’ve heard the record or not, you would most definitely remember the album sitting on the shelves at Media Play with artwork that featured an androgynous, robotic Manson with long red hair and lipstick posing eerily. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200—the band’s first number one album.
Ganja White Night
[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] Ganja White Night knows a few things—most importantly how to craft the perfect wobbly bassline, and how to build it up into the perfect climax. The Belgium based duo have even gone as far as to call themselves “Wobble Masters.” Decide for yourself when Ganja White Night returns to Buffalo for a show at the Town Ballroom on Monday, February 12 with support from Dirt Monkey and Subtronics. Presented by MNM Presents.
In This Moment
[METAL] In This Moment cobble together a mishmash of mythology, literary references, and occult esotericism to trace out the origin of their particular brand of heavy metal music—from Shakespeare references to characterizing lead singer Maria Brink as a “mother goddess.” But practically speaking, what you really need to known about the Los Angeles based five-piece band is that they bring loud, heavy, intense music with them to their live gigs, as well as a spectacular theatrical stage set up that invites comparisions to Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie.
Disco Hospital
[DISCO] If you need some healing, then Disco Hospital is the place for you. Expect to be prescribed plenty of post-punk and new wave by DJ (Doctor?) Bill Nehill, this Friday, February 9 for this disco happy hour at Mohawk Place.
