[INDIE] Local indie rock band Feverbox have put together a nice lineup for their industry night this Monday, January 22 at Babeville’s 9th Ward. The three-piece indie rock band will be joined by garage rockers Deadwolf, party boy DJ Miosi, and Quinton Brock of the Get Money Squad flying solo. This one is made for partying like it’s the weekend on a Monday. Oh yeah, and it’s free.
[FUNK] G Love & Special Sauce is a different kind of beast—smashing together aspects of hip hop, R&B, and alternative rock. The brainchild of Garrett “G. Love” Dulton, this formula seems like it might not work, but Special Sauce pulls it off effortlessly. The band, formed in 1992 in Philadelhpia Pennsylvania are due for a new record soon, so don’t be surprised to hear them test out some new stuff when the band comes to the Seneca Niagara Casino Bears Den on Thursday, January 25.
[BLUES] Blues man Albert Castiglia has been pretty busy. The 48-year-old musician has released four records in the last four years on Ruf Records, which have included originals, blues standards, and a few covers including a cover of the Rolling Stones’ song “Sway.” Catch Albert Castiglia at the Tralf Music Hall on Thursday, January 25 with support from Maria Aurigema.
[CLASSICAL] The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a selection of Mozart’s operatic favorites at two shows this Saturday, January 27 at 2:30pm and 8pm. Five singers from Juilliard’s Young Artists program will join the BPO to lend their vocals to “The Marriage of Figaro,” Don Giovanni,” Cosi fan tutte,” and more.
[ROCK] When Ryan Adams is part of your intervention, you know you need help. And former Drive By Truckers guitarist Jason Isbell got help after Adams and a few others confronted him about various addictions in early 2012. His breakthrough solo album, 2013’s lauded Southeastern, was the start of a new chapter in his life, something he’s been unusually transparent about since. His Muscle Shoals-based band, The 400 Unit — which features his violinist wife, Amanda Shires — is named after an Alabama psych ward.
[FUNK] Dropping into Buffalo on their winter tour is the eight-piece funk band West End Blend. The Hartford, Connecticut based band is lead by supremely soulful singer Erica Bryan and deliver poppy funk-rock along the lines of classic acts like Stevie Wonder, Parliament Funkadelic, and Chaka Khan. Catch West End Blend at Nietzsche’s on Wednesday, January 31 with special guest Critt’s Juke Joint.
[JAZZ] Enjoy a tasty throwback with Buffalo supergroup The Banjo Juice Jazz Band. The band, which features Tyler Westcott of Folkfaces on guitar, trumpet player Sean Ebert, Pine Fever’s Kyle Ohlson on clarinet and sax, drummer Craig Hough, Joseph Donohue III of The Albrights fame on piano and vocals, and Kyle Yagielski on pretty much everything else—sousaphone, trumpet, and trombone—plays a mixture of 1920s Jazz, blues and swing. Check out The Banjo Juice Jazz Band at Pausa Art House on Friday, January 26.
[FUNK] It’s been a wild ride for Chaka Khan, who is making a rare Western New York appearance at Seneca Niagara Casino’s Events Center in Niagara Falls on Saturday, January 27.
[COMEDY] The self-proclaimed “ghetto Dr. Phil,” Corey Holcomb is an actor and stand up comic from Chicago. Holcomb’s appearances on Last Comic Standing and MTV’s Wild N Out have been great for his exposure, but his true fans tune into his radio show, The Corey Holcomb 5150 Show to hear the comic’s hilarious banter with his guests. Holcomb has credited comic Godfrey, another comic who has recently made his way through Helium, as a person who helped him launch his comedy career.
[EXPERIMENTAL] I’ve seen Cages perform several times, and one thing is for sure, I’ve never heard the same show twice. That’s by design, and that’s a good thing. The band’s default mode of operation is collaboration, whether it be with a hardcore band like Gas Chamber or the Javanese percussion group, Buffalo Gamelan Club.
[ALT ROCK] If you’re looking to get your alternative rock fix this weekend, here’s your show. Taking the top slot is THIS, the Buffalo-based three piece alt rock band with the Spinal Tap-esque two bass player set up lead by bassist and singer Hayley. They’ll be joined by indie rock new-comers Bank Noise, and folk rockers Able Footing. Check it out this Saturday, January 27 at Mr. Goodbar on Elmwood.
[TRIBUTE] Soul Patch is alive in 2018. The 1990s cover band, lead by Every Time I Die lead singer Keith Buckley. Buckley channels the spirit of your favorite dead rockstars—like Kurt Cobain and Chris Cornell—and even some living guys too, with an ease and proficiency that can only come from a sincere relationship with their music, as well as a familiarity with the type of lives these guys have lead that develops after years of touring down of the same paths.
[INDIE] Brooklyn-based duo Diet Cig kind of sit at the intersection of pop punk and indie rock—pounding out high energy major chord punk-inspired pop music with a social justice bent. The hooks are plenty, but they’re not the type that make one cringe like so many pop punk climaxes. For a duo, they make quite a bit of noise too, somehow filling out the holes with loudness, but not in a way that ever gets annoying. Plus, they have a song called “Maid of the Mist” which is a pretty cool reference from across the state.
Two former Erie County Legislators were given patronage jobs with the Erie County Board of Elections — Republican Ted Morton and Democrat Betty Jean Grant. In an editorial, the Buffalo News is quite upset about this, offering up the headline, “Lose an election? No worries!”
