Letter: So, We Didn't Get Amazon...
Great Again
You now live in a country where a high school shooting spree that left two 15 year-olds dead and almost 20 others injured barely registers a blip in the news.
Spotlight: Tyler Westcott, Brassband, Dixieland, Americana, and Burlesque
FIve years ago, Tyler Westcott moved to Buffalo from Hunt, New York. He quickly immersed himself in the folk and Americana music here—though he doesn’t prefer the word “Americana,” because it’s too vague—and set his eyes on throwing a big, fun, party that would bring musicians, artists, and burlesque dancers together in one room.
Investigative Post: State Says Wheatfield Toxins Contained
State environmental regulators concluded Monday that tests show a landfill in Wheatfield that once held Love Canal waste is not contaminating neighboring properties.
The findings run counter to claims made by plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against the Town of Wheatfield, which owns the landfill, and seven companies believed to have dumped there.

Investigative Post: Derenda's Mess
Last Monday, Daniel Derenda was Buffalo police commissioner. As of last Wednesday, out of the blue, he’s retired. The lack of public notice has some people, including me, wondering if there’s more than what meets the eye. I mean, who announces their retirement the day they walk out the door, especially the guy in charge?
This much is certain: He leaves behind a police department that is, well, kind of a mess. Some he inherited, others cropped up on his watch.
Most telling, perhaps, are the cases of Wardel Davis, Jose Hernandez-Rossy, and Craig Lehner.

"Lügenpresse" is Going to Get Someone Killed
Lügenpresse — lying press — “fake news” — is a distinctly German slur that the Nazis used to slam the Jewish, foreign, and opposition press. It’s a handy way to demonize any media that don’t follow the party line. It’s no surprise, then, that one of the mantras of the Trump Cult is “fake news”.
Buffalo Soup Fest
[FESTIVAL] Here’s an easy and fun way to warm up this winter weekend; head over to the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center for the 8th Annual Buffalo Soup Fest. 30 restaurants will be serving up their best steaming hot soups for your tasting. Expect live entertainment, kids stuff, and giveaways too. Sunday, January 28.
Larkinville Ice Festival
[WINTER FESTIVAL] It’s winter, embrace it. That seems like the motto for the Larkinville Ice Festival. This 4th annual celebration features plenty to do for the whole family including activities for kids, a local vendor market on a heated (?!) boardwalk, and a few friendly, winter-ready, alpacas. Expect a sledding hill, snow yoga (or “snowga”), and horse drawn carriage rides too. And of course, food and drinks from all of the surrounding neighborhood joints like Hydraulic Hearth, Buffalo Distilling Company, Flying Bison, and more.
Brassband Dixieland Americana & Burlesque
[AMERICANA] The name says it all. The 5th annual Brassband Dixieland Americana & Burlesque show is coming up this weekend and it’s chock full of all of the above.
