Herbie Hancock Tribute Night

[TRIBUTE] At age 77, jazz master Herbie Hancock still gets around just fine. He’s got a few tour dates lined up for next month, but unfortunately for us, they’re on the opposite coast. Local fans can still get their Hancock fix, however, as the fourth annual Herbie Hancock tribute night happens this Thursday, February 22 at Nietzsche’s. The show will feature the Alex Mcarthur/Jon Lehning Sextet as well as the Truth Travelers—a mashup band consisting of members of The Truth and Intrepid Travelers.

Law Eh Soe

[PHOTOGRAPHY] One of Buffalo’s great secret treasures is offering a rare glimpse into his life’s work this Friday night at the WASH Project. Burmese dissident and photojournalist Law Eh Soe is exhibiting black and whites that span the fields and streets of Burma to the living rooms of Buffalo and the de facto festival grounds of Unity Island. These are images the speak to the moment and articulate a slice of what global migration and immigration look like; a pattern of local life as old as the West Side itself.

Wild Rivers

[INDIE] Wild Rivers is a four-piece folky pop band from Toronto. They’ll cross the border for a show at Buffalo’s Mohawk Place on Saturday, February 24. Opening sets come from synth-y indie pop band Mutual Friends and alt rock band Younger Then.

Let's Get Lifted!

[DISCO] I have to confess: I have a problem. I go to local record stores and buy cheap-ass disco records. It’s become an obsession because there are some really funky, rhythmic treasures to find out there. I share this obsession with a couple of local DJs and that’s where this all starts. We’ve decided to get together and throw a monthly disco, funk, and soul dance party, the last Thursday of the month at Hardware in Allentown and we’re calling it Let’s Get Lifted.

The Cure vs the Smiths Dance Party: Year 15

[DANCE PARTY] This used to be a pretty close contest, but Morrissey makes it harder and harder every year to vote Smiths. What with his constant tour cancellations (at least one cancellation, but sometimes entire legs of a tour on 11 of his tours since 1992), his controversial comments on… well just about everything, but most recently the rape accusations against Kevin Spacey, and much less recently, the loosely racist comments on black pop music that have resurfaced from his days with The Smiths.

Alan Doyle

[ROCK] Canadian musician, Alan Doyle, best known as the lead singer of the now defunct 1990s folk rock band Great Big Sea, returns to Buffalo for a show at the Town Ballroom on Wednesday, February 28. The 48-year-old singer and guitarist is touring in support of his third solo record, A Week at the Warehouse, which was released late last year. Support comes from Canadian folk-pop band, Fortunate Ones.

Sons of Apollo

[METAL] “Progressive metal supergroup” is not the kind of term that gets thrown around much in the year 2018, but that makes Sons of Apollo a rare breed. The band, formed last year, features Derek Sherinan and Mike Portnoy of iconic metal band Dream Theater, as well as Belly Sheehan of David Lee Roth fame, and Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, formerly of Guns N’ Roses. Last year, the supergroup released their debut record, Psychotic Sympony. Catch Sons of Apollo live at the Town Ballroom on Friday, February 16.
