Igloo Music: Vinyl Classics Chrismukkah

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] In anticipation of their New Year’s Eve party: Reanimate, the Igloo Music guys chose some of their favorite club tracks of the year. You can check that out on our website, dailypublic.com. If that’s not enough anticipation, you can get a taste of what the Igloo crew has to offer at their Vinyl Classics Chrismukkah party at the Gypsy Parlor on Saturday, December 20.

The Tins

[INDIE ROCK] With the release of their latest EP, Young Blame, seasoned Buffalo indie rock band, the Tins have taken their straight forward rock music and implanted richly layered strings and synthesizers. The three-piece band comes to Buffalo Iron Works on Thursday, December 18.

Owen Benjamin

[COMEDY] Oswego’s own Owen Benjamin once opened for Julio Iglesias. Owen Benjamin sang opera as a kid. Owen Benjamin followed Jimmy Fallon around on tour to help him hone his stand-up chops before Fallon took over the Tonight Show. Owen Benjamin has done a lot of interesting things, and as a stand up comedian the more diverse your experiences, the more you have to work with on stage. Benjamin will perform on stage at Helium Comedy Club for five shows; Thursday, December 18 through Saturday, December 20.

SAGITTARIAN (Nov 22/Dec 21)—At work, you put together a group of people to do a job. They fail miserably and a desk is overturned. That support undergarment you bought suddenly gives out and you will feel depressed and fat all week. Don’t answer phone calls. Order some carry-out and split the meal over the course of two or three dark days.

Two Buffalo art educators will be showcasing their new works in the Falls’ cozy wine and tapas bar next Tuesday. 2014 Queen City Market

This holiday season, shoppers can avoid the hectic last-minute Christmas shopping at crowded big-box stores as they make their way to the fourth annual Queen City Market this Saturday. This one-stop-shop art market will take place at its usual spot: Porter Hall of Karpeles Manuscript Museum. Attendees will once again be surrounded by Buffalo’s lively art community, with an array of locally made gift options. The event is free and runs from 11am to 5pm.

Centerfold: Mexico City Protests

I happened to be in Mexico this fall when a series of marches, protests, and actions took place in response the disappearance, in late September, of 43 students from Ayotzinapa. The US media was slow to cover the attack on the students, the discovery of their likely remains, and the eventual arrest of local police and officials, but in Mexico these events have dominated the headlines.

Public Art: Building Community, Building Audiences

Art can be used as a tool to solve many problems. Thus, about one year ago the Erie County Legislature and Executive and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown made the commitment to a public art program with the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Art should be part of the gear in the toolbox of Buffalo’s economic growth, and it seems these elected leaders understand this.

To explore the world of making art in the public domain, we talked about a couple of strategies with four key players:
