Story: Dreamers & Skaters

With a possessive yet inclusive slogan–”Our Winter. Our Waterfront.”–downtown Buffalo’s shiniest, newest attraction, The Ice at Canalside, opened with festive pomp on December 18. Timed for winter holidays and sport, the grand opening program was a mix of two-minute speeches by electeds from atop one of the span bridges over the icy representative canals, booming live (Neon Trees) and recorded music, and sporty demos.

THE INTERVIEW will open in WNY this Friday

Sony Pictures has just announced that it will screen The Interview at Houston’s Alamo Drafthouse Theater on Christmas Day. And will you see it if it does? Stay tuned!

UPDATE: The North Park reports that, due to a contractual obligation to run its current feature Wild, they will not show The Interview on Christmas.

A BEAR Christmas Carol 4: The Bear Gets Hostel in the Stairwell

[HOLIDAY] Call it the anti-Christmas Christmas party: a collection of musical black sheep having absconded from their relieved relatives to join hands and sing the praises of nacho cheese. “A bunch of weirdos doing weird shit,” Buffalo arts handyman Kevin Cain describes it, “set to music, of course.” There will be dancing, and costumes, and props. “We really can’t emphasize the presence of props enough,” Cain adds. Escape from the cookies and cheer and get back to basics, like dancing to an experimental performance in the stairwell of a hostel.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones have hit many speed bumps in their 30-year career, but their music remains just as solid as ever. Their 1997 release, Let’s Face It, demonstrated their strong capacity for melodic punk, and was a huge success. Though, through the years, their brand of ska music has progressed from hard rock to a more reggae, pop-punk sound, which plays very nicely with their ska melodies. Their latest album, The Magic of Youth, is a jaunting collection filled with dynamic crescendos and unique, yet beautiful instrumentation.
