This past weekend featured interactions with two divergent icons: one of them representational, musical and of international renown; the other local and ostensibly intergalactic. Elvis Presley and Promo the Robot made appearances in Western New York—Elvis on the shores of Lake Erie and Promo on the ice of Rotary Rink in downtown Buffalo.

One-Stop Shop-Til-You-Drop
This holiday season, shoppers can avoid the hectic last-minute Christmas shopping at crowded big-box stores as they make their way to the fourth annual Queen City Market this Saturday. This one-stop-shop art market will take place at its usual spot: Porter Hall of Karpeles Manuscript Museum. Attendees will once again be surrounded by Buffalo’s lively art community, with an array of locally made gift options. The event is free and runs from 11am to 5pm.
The Spy Who Went Out in the Cold
Chevelle
[ROCK] Believe it or not, Chevelle is still a band. Not only is the alternative rock band, formed in 1994 in Grayslake, Illinois still together, but they even put out an album this year, La Gargola, their seventh overall and first since 2011. Take that, Yahoo Answers. Chevelle comes to the Rapids Theatre on Tuesday, December 16 with special guests Crobot and Raw Fabrics, presented by 103.3 The Edge.
Mat Zo
[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] Most fans can tell that the EDM bubble has been blowing up. Festivals dedicated to electronic dance music are popping up all over the country; letting the next generation of fans experience music through the hands of various DJ’s and producers and allowing the ease of distribution through the internet to spread the word. At only 23 years old, Mat Zo is an up-and-comer who has made a name for himself in a very short amount of time.
Workingman's Dead
[TRIBUTE] Buffalo has always had a strong Grateful Dead fan base with a rich history and supporters you can find around the city in all walks of life. No matter where you find them though, the community is a close knit family who are there for the music. This Friday, December 12, Workingman’s Dead, one of Buffalo’s best Dead cover acts, will be at Buffalo Iron Works. The band recreates the music and aura of one of music history’s greatest improvising acts and, arguably the band that defined the jam scene as we know it today.
Schism
It’s got to be tough being a Tool tribute band: The band is famous for their hyper-technical brand of alternative metal music. Tool hasn’t released an album in nearly eight years, though, and that has left many fans wanting more. That’s where Schism comes in. The New York City based Tool tribute band comes to Buffalo Iron Works on Saturday, December 13 with Rage Against The Machine tribute band Anger is a Gift.
Zach Deputy
[ROCK] The evolution of sound as music will forever have a progressive trajectory. Every once in a while though, someone truly unique comes around, flipping everything you thought was possible and opening your eyes to something new. Zach Deputy not only brings a fresh spin musically, but his approach is what sets him apart. With the universe of technology musicians have at the tips of their fingers these days, the term one-man band is kicked around a lot, but Deputy takes it to a whole new level.
Caspa
[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] Dubstep legend Caspa never misses an opportunity to play Buffalo. The influential London-based producer was insturmental in the rise of dubsteb, along with his friend Rusko, who played Buffalo just last month. The two helped launch the genre into popularity with their 2007 FabricLive mix. The DJ, who now lives in Denver Colorado—a hotbed for American electronic music—has more recently remixed songs by Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, and Ludacris.
Bohemian Belly Dance Holiday Party
[HOLIDAY] Unless your auntie is Shakira, this is not your average family holiday party. On Wednesday, December 17 the Gypsy Parlor will hold their second holiday party featuring entertainment by Flueron Rouge belly dancers, and the Belly Dance Academy.
Nava Fader and Marten Clibbens
[POETRY] The doors are red, but will the grass surrounding the Parkside Lutheran Church in North Buffalo still be green come Thursday to instill holiday cheer? Will the drones overhead persist in micro-managing our emotional response to the passage of time? Join two poets, Nava Fader and Marten Clibbens, who read and wear their poems like old clothes at 2014’s final installment of Just Buffalo’s Wordflight series.
Holy Dickens! Squeaky Wheel Dysfunctional Holiday Party
Buffalo’s venerable Squeaky Wheel Film & Arts Center is the area’s longest running media resource center, providing opportunities for youth, adults and artists to create and exhibit their work. The organization will be turning 30 in the coming months, and moving to a new location in the Market Arcade Building, owned by local developer, Nick Sinatra. “Squeaky Wheel moving in was a slam dunk on our part. It met our mission and fits the theme of the building that houses other non-profits and creative businesses.
Tribute to Phish
[TRIBUTE] On April 19, 1991 Phish performed at Nietzsche’s in Buffalo, cementing the legendary venue’s claim to fame as a starting point for future world-rewown acts. Now, in honor of that night, local phish phans come together for what has become an annual tradition: The Good Neighborhood’s tribute to Phish. This rendition will feature acts like Brown Sugar, Imperial Brown, and Gravy (Adam Bronstein of Universe Shark with bassist Brad Robbins). It happens on Saturday, December 13 at Nietzsche’s.
Chuck Ragan
[ALT COUNTRY] For Chuck Ragan—former frontman of the Florida-based, post-hardcore outfit, Hot Water Music—going solo meant leaving one of the greatest punk bands of the decade, packing away the angst, and embarking on a country-tinged folk journey. The quest seemed crazy, but his latest release, Till Midnight, melodically screams that he made the right decision.
A Will Away
[PUNK] Hailing from Connecticut, rising emo-punk quartet, A Will Away, will play on Sunday, December 14 at The Forvm. Some of their tracks have the fierceness of punk rock, with quick riffs and punchy drumming; while their acoustic-guitar driven ballads are dripping with emotion and backed by Matt Carlson’s powerful vocals. Their arrangements combine low vocals with strong instrumentals to dish out catchy tracks that undeniably translate into their live shows.
