Aries Spears

[COMEDY] Comedian Aries Spears was on 198 episodes of Mad TV, so chances are if you’ve tuned into that show you’ve probably seen Spears do one of his famous (or infamous) impressions. From Eddie Murphy to uh oh… O.J. Simpson, here are some of Spears’ best celebrity impressions. Spears comes to Helium Comedy Club for five shows, this Thursday, February 26 through Saturday, February 28.

Getting Your PLUSH Desserts

[ART] As part of their Fourth Fridays free public programming sponsored by M&T Bank, UB Graduate student and artist Tommy Nguyen and the wonderful staff at Buffalo Arts Studio cordially invite you to come savor some sweet and salty treats while immersed in the fantastical world of PLUSH, a site-specific sculptural installation. Throughout the run of this show, which is up until March 6, Nguyen has continually added new pieces of work to this brightly colored and patterned fabric based work.

Engine

[SPACE ROCK] Engine never really belonged in Atlanta. Their brand of spacey rock—subtle chiming guitars, slow motion drums, driving bass—would have probably fit in well in Buffalo in the 1990s, but the band never quite made it here.

Bringing the Farm Into Schools

Call it the reverse field trip: Buffalo Public Schools have gotten one step closer to bringing the farm to Buffalo students.

At a Monday press conference, BPS officials joined Congressman Brian Higgins and Board of Education member Jay McCarthy in announcing the reception of a $45,000 grant from the USDA aimed at developing a strategy to integrate locally-sourced foods into the diets of students with a farm-to-schools initiative.

Burma VJ

[FILM] Kicking off their ACESS Documentary Film Series, Squeaky Wheel is presenting locals a rare opportunity to watch this Oscar nominated film, Burma VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country, followed by a Q&A with political prisoners that currently reside in Buffalo: Zaw Win from The Wash Project, and Executive Director from the All Burma Monks’ Alliance, U Pyinya Zawta. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about the “Saffron Revolution” from people who survived this catastrophic event.

Spotlight: Jonathan Casey

Jonathan Casey was that kid who wanted to rearrange your room when he came over to play. You know the one: he had some big ideas about better utilizing the space, a different spot where the bed should go, and a suggestion for a new paint color.

Your mom probably didn’t warm to his helpful ideas, but eventually his did, allowing him to preside over interior changes to his family’s West Seneca home. And so, an interior designer was born. One that was named Buffalo Magazine’s “Hottest New Designer to Watch” in 2013.

Madd Tiki Winter Luau

[PARTY] To help Buffalonians take their minds off of this blustering winter and warm, visitors to the new RiverWorks event complex will be temporarily transported to a tropical oasis for the Madd Tiki Winter Luau. Mark Madden of Madd Tiki Tattoo, the mastermind behind this event—this Saturday, February 28, presented by Buffalo Rising—found the inspiration to create this one-of-a-kind party after taking trips to Polynesia and Hawaii and experiencing the culture, spiritual healing, and energy emitted from these islands.

Solidisco

Most fans in Buffalo probably know them as DJ Dstar and Biacco, but to the rest of the country Don Skotnicki and Matt McGurn are known as Solidisco.

Radarada

[HIP HOP] Truly a unique Buffalonian concoction, Radarada presents as hip-hop on the surface but with jazz at the foundation. Ana Vafai’s lilting vocals smoothe the edges on an already appealing blend of easily-digestible grooves and fun samples, flanked by a pair of male emcee’s delivering the rhymes.
