Story: Free Art

In a gush of largesse, Albright-Knox Art Gallery waived admission for any resident of Erie County during the week of February 10-15, coinciding with the closing days of the poetical color field exhibition by American painter Helen Frankenthaler and an abstract retrospective by painter Paul Feeley. The gallery staff, board of directors, and County Executive Mark Poloncarz meant this as a gift for those who help to fund the cultural site—the tax-paying public.

Spotlight: Solidisco

Most fans in Buffalo probably know them as DJ Dstar and Biacco, but to the rest of the country Don Skotnicki and Matt McGurn are known as Solidisco. After DJing on the local circuit for some time as solo acts, the two musicians paired up to form a production duo two years ago. Since then, they’ve released records on labels like Fool’s Gold, Get Right, Mixmash, and Ultra Records.

Gos Gozah: Future Riot Edition

[DANCE] If you’re down with some oldschool gay wave, vogue-beats, and HI-NRG mashups, well then this is your dance party. And if you’re not, then get into it anyways. DJs Bootyhammer, ABC Crew, and Mascone Lee highlight the Future Riot edition of the monlty alt-queer dance party, Gos Gozah at Milkie’s this Saturday, February 21.

This workshop will be offered in the studio classroom that offers attendees a safe place to talk and share ideas. For more information, email Mary Kozub at kozubmm@buffalostate.edu

The Soft Love

[ROCK] Barely a month after their first gig and it’s safe to say that The Soft Love’s sound is continuing to evolve as they ready their first recordings. But the band comes from trustworthy stock, merging from the remnants of the now defunct bands Son of the Sun and the Thermidors.

Moosh & Twist

[HIP HOP] Moosh & Twist are not instructions for the latest dance craze. Moosh & Twist is not an ice cream flavor. Moosh & Twist aka Team OCD are young rappers making a name for themselves in the Philadelphia hip hop scene and beyond.

Foreigner

[ROCK] Making the list of “Best Selling Music Artists” is a feat every artist strives for, or at least used to. Back when selling music meant something, album sales were the benchmark for success. Anyone on the list is recognizable and listing off songs like, “Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold as Ice,” “Head Games,” and “Juke Box Hero,” immediately give away who is coming to town. That’s right!

Armcannon

[VIDEO GAME MUSIC] For any kid that grew up in the 1980s or 1990s, the music of video games was everywhere. From arcades to home systems, hearing a particular theme song now can bring you right back. For years, Buffalo’s own Armcannon have been providing that as a band, covering the music of many popular video games. The group has played with the Buffalo Philharmonic and done shows across the country showcasing everything from Zelda to Mario.

The Heavy Pets

[FUNK] The Heavy Pets are a perfect blend of all that’s right in music. The Pets stand firmly on a rock base, but add touches of blues, soulful funk, reggae, and jam to make music that can put a smile on anyone’s face. Popular in jam circles, the guys call Florida home, but since 2005 have made their name at every popular festival across the country. The band has played Bonnaroo and All Good to Catskill Chill and their own festival called PetZoo. The world of live music is clearly where they shine.

Tim Reynolds & TR3

[ROCK] Tim Reynolds should be a familiar face to many Buffalonians. As the lead guitarist of the Dave Matthews Band, Reynolds has been making stops in the Queen City every summer for quite some time. When he’s not touring with Dave though, Reynolds has a side project that people should familiarize themselves with the same enthusiasm. Unlike DMB, Tim Reynolds & TR3 have an eclectic sound, covering the tonal qualities of funk, rock, and jazz.
