[EXPERIMENTAL] Using a handmade analog synthesizer constructed out of telephone parts, Brooklyn artist Meridian 7 creates pulsating interference patterns, patched over static signals. The ground had cracked with the bitter cold of late January in the farm fields of Missouri. Clutching my shiny new burp gun from Christmas only weeks ago, alone, I played Korea…not but two years since the stalemate in Panmunjom. Even in a slight breeze the air stung, made it hard to keep my eyes open, but the will to play Korea with my new gun was stronger than the weather. No reason to limit it to actual winners or even nominees: in the traditionally struggling field of foreign-language imports, the fact that a film was nominated to be a nominee is enough to perk up the interest of distributors. Countries are invited to select the film they want to have considered for the category of Best Foreign Language Film; from these submissions the Academy selects five nominees.
