Cooler EP Release Show

[ROCK] A few of the area’s top grunge bands are putting on a concert this Saturday, November 19 at Nietzsche’s. Headliners Cooler are ready to drop their latest album, Phantom Phuzz, a series of emo-influenced grunge tracks. They’ll be joined by alternative rock band the Naturalists, slowshine—a shoegaze band out of Albany—and indie rock band Hundred Plus Club. Presented by Yace Booking.

Interview: Fitz and the Tantrums

[FILLER] Fitz and the Tantrums continue defying the odds. The Los Angeles-based sextet played its debut gig at Hollywood’s Hotel Café just one week after rehearsing for the first time. Not a full year later, Adam Levine invited them to open a string of Maroon Five gigs. After releasing Pickin’ Up the Pieces on the indie imprint Dangerbird, they scored a deal with Elektra: Dangerbird co-founder Jeff Catelaz had become Elektra’s president in the interim.

Tab Benoit

[BLUES] If you’re a blues fan, then Tab Benoit is likely a very familiar name. As a contemporary bluesman, Benoit (pronounced ben-wah) is known to champion the swampy Delta style with his electric Fender Stratocaster, sweetening the stew with soulful bits along the way. It’s this combination that’s set him apart from other electric blues contemporaries, along with his passion for his home state of Louisiana, which landed him work on the Katrina-focused IMAX documentary film Hurricane on the Bayou.

The Full Monty

[PUNK] This oddball lineup at Mohawk Place on Thursday, November 17, holds a little something for everyone, beginning with Detroit trio the Full Monty. Still celebrating the later summer release of their debut, Bombay, Monty is mainly a vehicle for the songwriting of frontman Dan Harness, who initially struck out as a troubadour. Harness and company are rooted in a punk aesthetic, but the sound is melded with bits of folk-pop and an occasional metallic crunch.

Nick DiPaolo

[COMEDY] Comedian Nick DiPaolo is by all accounts a conservative’s comic. “You heard Chris Rock saying that there’s nothing to make fun about Obama…and I was like, ‘Do you wanna make a bet?’” he said in an interview with Politico not too long ago. With Obama exiting the White House, he’ll have to change up some of his material, but it’ll be interesting to hear his take on Donald Trump. DiPaolo comes to Helium Comedy Club for five shows this Thursday, November 17 through Saturday, November 19.

Thursday Night Terrors: Phantasm II

[SCREENING] Scary movie season doesn’t necessarily end on Halloween. Some might say that’s just the beginning. And we haven’t moved into full-blown Christmas movie season yet, so why not a few more horror gems? Thursday Night Terrors, the horror movie series at the Amherst Dipson, continues the season with a screening of Phantasm II on Thursday, November 17.

Jake Shimabukuro

[POP] If you’ve ever wondered who usually tops lists of the best ukulele players in the world, it’s Jake Shimabukuro. The 40-year-old ukulele virtuoso has gone viral performing songs like “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” but he’s also got albums upon albums’ worth of original material. As far as ukulele players go, Shimabukuro is as mainstream as they get, having performed at major festivals like Bonnaroo and SXSW. He’s also performed on several of the major late-night TV shows.
