Ignobility: Gimme Danger

The cameraman in the first interview clip we see tells us that “We are interrogating Jim Osterberg about The Stooges, the greatest rock and roll band ever.” You likely know Jim better as Iggy Pop, and if you need to be told that said Stooges are not Curly, Larry and Moe but rather the band that came out of Ann Arbor, Michigan in the late 1960s, then this is not the movie for you.

AK360 Public Meeting Tonight

[MEETING] The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is holding a free, interactive public meeting tonight, Tuesday November 1, at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. The session will include representitives of the Albright-Knox, their artchitecvtural partner OMA, and landscape artchitect MVVA Inc. Discussion will focus on the next phase of the art museum’s growth, which includes an expansion afforded by a donation from investor and Buffalo native Jeffrey Gundlach.

First Friday

[ART] Appreciators of local art talent have a chance to stock their larders full of food for the winter ahead this weekend, with an explosion of art openings beginning on Thursday on Niagara Street. The BT&C Gallery will open a show of wallpaper prototypes based on each year of the 1970s while across the street, Sugar City is putting on an exhibition of visual poetry.

Metro Station

[POP] Formed by Trace Cyrus, brother of pop-star Miley Cyrus, Metro Station is a pop-rock band formed in 2006. Though Cyrus left the band in 2010, he returned in 2014 in time to co-write the band’s sophomore record, Savior, released in 2015. Now, on the road once again, Metro Station will come to Buffalo for a show at the Studio at the Waiting Room on Friday, November 4.

S U R V I V E

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] Though the band formed in 2009, it wasn’t until the release of the crazy-popular Netflix series Stranger Things that Survive broke out. That’s because two of the group’s members, Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, were responsible for the perfectly composed soundtrack to the nostalgia-inducing show. Rolling Stone describes their music as “part John Carpenter, part Italian giallo, part Girorgio Moroder…” and that vibe struck a chord with the show’s creators.

Buffalo Without Borders

[FOOD] The meaning of the word “melting pot” gets lost in translation. Some think a melting pot means assimilation, others think it is meant to celebrate the diversity of the country we live in. According to Google, melting pot means “a place where different peoples, styles, theories, etc., are mixed together.” By definition, Buffalo will bring this word to life at the International Institute of Buffalo’s (IIB) annual event, Buffalo Without Borders.

AJJ

[PUNK] The desert dwelling punk band AJJ will be coming to Waiting Room this Saturday to entertain us with their bitter tales of hopelessness, despair and weak, but assuring, optimism in this “garbage world.” Formerly known as Andrew Jackson Jihad, the band is showcasing their latest album, The Bible 2, which isn’t too far off from their previous stuff but the lyrics are a bit heavier, more personal.

Shonen Knife

[PUNK] The Japanese trio is coming to Mohawk Place this Friday night, November 4 to serve, if you can believe it, a healthy dose of pure and happy sounding punk magic. The ladies are all pros by now—after 25 years of touring and singing about the wonderful and simple things in life, primarily cookies, cats, ramen and wasabi, the three women band has gotten the intricacies of appealing to an international fanbase and acknowledging pop culture’s cat hysteria down to a T.

Lera Lynn

[ROCK] Lera Lynn’s recurring character on True Detective is that of a singer-songwriter hitting rock bottom, but there’s little carryover from that experience on her latest, Resistor. Which isn’t to imply the disc is full of blinding sun spots; it’s dark.

Dopapod and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong

[JAM] Boston-based Dopapod returns to Buffalo Iron Works with renewed chemistry—specifically, the band has reunited with original drummer Neal “Fro” Evans, who went on hiatus a few years back. For what’s bound to be an exhilarating jammy two-fer, they’re teamed on a co-bill with Baltimore funkateers, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, out supporting their groove-laden disc, Pleasure, out this past April. Put on your dancing sneakers and head down to the cobblestones on Thursday, November 3.

Dynamo with The Truth

[JAZZ] Nietzsche’s has become a hot-spot for jazz music and the trend continues when the Nashville-based jazz-rock band Dynamo comes to town on Friday, November 4. Akin to Snarky Puppy or Kneebody, the band works in some R&B and funk influences as well. They’ll be joined by the local supergroup, The Truth, which include members of Folkfaces, Intrepid Travelers, Gravy, Dreambeaches, and more.
