They’re celebrating by slinging $2 draft Community Beer Works suds, as well as $2 punch and shots. DJs Shane & Tone will be on hand to spin their favorite funk and soul cuts.
The Heavy Pets
[JAM] Rock, funk, R&B, a taste of jazz and a dash of disco, The Heavy Pets cover it all—sometimes within one song. Their debut, Whale, was a double disc and was released in 2007. Their latest, is 2014’s Stolen Smile, which means we’re likely to hear some new, perhaps experimental cuts when the band returns to Buffalo Iron Works on Friday, November 11 with their friends Primate Fiasco.
Visions: A Photographic Journey in Social Justice
[PHOTO] Visions: A Photographic Journey in Social Justice is a visual arts exhibit which features the photographs of local social justice activists. Artists include Monique Owens, Ahmad Nieves, Rosa Rojas, Howard Patton III, Sarah Wooton, Jennifer Connor, Inda Walton, Michelle Jones, Danielle Gates-White, and Franchelle Hart. Funds raised by the sale of artwork, in the form of a silent auction, will go toward Emerging Leaders, the leadership development program created by Open Buffalo.
Asking Alexandria
[METAL] English metalcore band Asking Alexandria is celebrating 10 years as a band and they’re doing it with all of their fans. The five piece band formed in 2006 and are now five albums deep. Their latest, this year’s The Black, is their first album sans frontman Danny Worsnop, but since its release, Worsnop, one of the band’s founding members has returned (fixing all of the perceived damage his replacement, Denis Shaforostov did in his stead).
Dizzy Wright
[HIP HOP] Dizzy Wright is a 25-year-old rapper signed to the Hopsin-headed indie record label Funk Volume. The Las Vegas-based rapper released his debut LP, SmokeOut Conversations in 2012, but gained traction with his follow up, The Growing Process, which was released on Warner Bros. His latest is the 702 EP (a reference to the Las Vegas area code) has received praise among critics.
Gallery Dances at Burchfield Penney Art Center
[DANCE] “Gallery Dances” is a four-day event of professional dance, being presented at the Burchfield Penney Center from November 10-13, curated by Jon Lehrer of Buffalo’s own Lehrer Dance. Each day has its own specific theme or showcases a renowned dance company or choreographer from the Queen City, helping expose the diversity of our dance scene to its residents.
Lavell Crawford
[COMEDY] Lavell Crawford is climbing the ranks of comedian achievement with his exposure on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and an appearance on Chelsea Lately. Crawford’s acting career also took off with his role as Huell Babineaux, a body guard, on the hit TV show, Breaking Bad. Known for his long winded stories about life, love, heaven, all the good stuff, Crawford’s style is sure to please. Crawford is coming to Helium Comedy Club on Friday November 11 through Sunday, November 13 for five shows.
Mount Moriah
[FOLK] Straight out of North Carolina, Mount Moriah, in their latest album How to Dance, takes the nostalgia of Southern art and culture and transforms it into themes of inter-relatedness and universality. The trio’s latest album focuses on these particular topics to inspire hope in the face of a socially stagnant and backward seeming Southern landscape, to find the magic in the idea that the present is built off of these historical traditions but continues to defy them, as well.
New Order vs Depeche Mode Transmission Dance Party
[DANCE PARTY] Oh shoot. New Order or Depeche Mode? Get ready to log off of Reddit and battle the question in real life on Saturday, November 12 at Mohawk Place where Aaron Andrews and Bill Page will be spinning tracks from the 1980s synth gods all night long. Ask yourself: who was better live? Who was a better lyricist? Which album influenced your teenage-self the most? Be prepared to back your claims up because, from what I’ve gleaned off the internet, passion defines the followers of either band.
Comics Against Humanity
[COMEDY] What better way to laugh off the political dread that’s filling the pits of our stomachs than with the card game that specifically plays off of black humor and the dregs of humanity? Comedians playing Cards Against Humanity, of course! Helium Comedy Club is hosting “Comics Against Humanity: A comedy show for horrible people” this Wednesday, November 9, during which the best of Buffalo’s comedians will improvise their set based off cards from the game.
HyperglowU
[PARTY] Billed as “America’s Largest Glow Party” HyperglowU is part EDM-spectacular, part human art gallery. Peter Wolf and the Midnight Travelers
[ROCK] Swivel-legged former J.
Lewis Black
[COMEDY] He’s mad as hell, and he’s not going to take it anymore! If the absurdity of a meltdown is your idea of hilarity, Lewis Black is your man. There’s no denying that watching Black unravel is satisfying, since he brilliantly articulates our collective rage on the way down. It’s what made him a regular draw on The Daily Show and keeps him filling halls the world over.
The Good Life, Field Mouse, and Jake Bellows
[INDIE] The latest from Omaha’s The Good Life — the side project started by Cursive frontman Tim Kasher — rocks a bit harder than the folk-pop quartet’s previous efforts.
Seven Lions
[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] California-based DJ/Producer Jeff Montalvo, a.k.a. Seven Lions, has moved steadily into more commercial territory since his first remixes appeared in 2011. By incorporating more vocals (including Ellie Goulding on 2014’s “Don’t Leave”) and deeply satisfying melodic pockets into his projects, his last few EP’s—released on the revived, now electro-centric Casablanca Records label—have all hit Billboard’s Dance top 5.
The Wood Brothers with Dylan LeBlanc
[FOLK] As an offshoot of Medeski, Martin, and Wood, one would expect the Wood Brothers to let loose a bit from their contained rootsy folk, and with last year’s Paradise, which brings the lauded group to Town Ballroom on Friday, November 11 they’ve done it. At least a little.
Yellow House, The Slums, Hypoluxo, and Sonny Baker
[INDIE] Yellow House, a new band comprising notable local musicians including Matt DiStasio, Quinn Moore, and Jesse Kaufman, will release a new tape at a show at Dreamland on Wednesday, November 16, presented by Scumbag Booking.
