Investigative Post: UB Foundation Invests in Fracking
M.A.G.S, Hundred Plus Club, Little Images, Mason-Jar
[INDIE] There are a bunch of reasons to check this show out, this Saturday at Nietzsche’s, the main reason being that it’s the release show for indie rock band Hundred Plus Club latest EP Everbody’s Friend. The band released a low-key simmering indie rock track, “Cooler,” late last month, which has the band blipping on our radar. The album will be released by Admirable Traits Records at the show this Saturday which also features M.A.G.S, who released their excellent self-titled album not too long ago.
Kansas
[ROCK] American rock band, Kansas, has had three platinum-selling albums in their 43-year long career, and they’ll perform one of those albums in full at their upcoming concert at the UB Center for the Arts.
Honey Coma, Options, Single Player, and Dreambeaches
[EMO] By this Saturday, all of your Thanksgiving dinner regrets will be but memories, but you can still get sad with Honey Coma and company. The self-proclaimed “sad rock trio”—featuring members of Humble Braggers and Mutual Friends, are on a solid line up of local and out of town bands Saturday, November 25 at Mohawk Place. Their latest release is last year’s emo-y 7 Songs, which is as depressing as it is danceable—a great combo if you’re in a self-loathing food coma and you need to dance off some of those calories.
Thanksgiving at City of Buffalo Animal Shelter
[THANKSGIVING] The dogs and cats at the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter are in for a fancy Thanksgiving feast, courtesy of the Hotel Henry. Chef Malik Von Saint will craft a three course meal for all of those furry friends in need of a home. The goal is to not only feed these guys, but hopefully find them a home too. I personally found my pooch, Crowley, a chihuahua mix, at the City Animal Shelter, and even though his breath stinks, I couldn’t imagine my life without him. If you’re looking to adopt a pet this holiday season, this is a great opportunity.
Maggie Cassella
Lesbian actress and comic Maggie Cassella brings her new show, Gay Panic, to Babeville’s 9th Ward on the night before Thanksgiving—because on a night before you brave the choppy waters of a family gathering (particularly for us LGBTQ peeps), you can use a good laugh! Presented by the fine folks at Hallwalls, Cassella’s new show is less headline-driven than her previous ones; instead, it’s geared to help us find humor and hope amid the widespread sense of helplessness many have been feeling.
Gary Allan
[COUNTRY] Twenty years ago when country began it’s painful transition to what it is now, Gary Allan was there—which means that his early material actually resembles real country music. Serendipity struck early, but Allan rejected an offer from A&M to finish schooling. Decca ended up releasing his debut in 1996, and Allan has stayed plenty active since then.
The Palmer Squares with Subsoil
[HIP HOP] A party band with a message, Rochester’s Subsoil have become regional festival regulars with their infectious hip-hop and funk fusion, featuring the sharp witticisms of Laz Green and fellow MC Mooney Faugh (whose stage presence, by the way, is entertaining in and of itself). At Buffalo Iron Works on Sunday, November 26, they’ll be opening up for Chicago-based hip-hop duo and cypher champs, The Palmer Squares, comprised of MCs Terminal Knowledge and Acumental.
Kim Simmonds & Savoy Brown
[BLUES] Some 50 years on from the 1967 debut, Shake Down, and Savoy Brown is still at it. With a career built more from touring than record sales, founding guitarist Kim Simmonds is the only remaining original member; since 2009, he’s toured as Savoy Brown with Pat DeSalvo on bass and Garnet Grimm on drums.
Tom Petty Tribute
[TRIBUTE] Buffalo theater mainstay Tom Makar takes the stage at Sportsmen’s Tavern on Monday, November 27 for a tribute to the music of late icon Tom Petty. Makar will be joined by fave local vocalist Lucy Bell, also of Record Theatre fame, and singer-songwriter Tim Andrews.
Republicans on the Wrong Side of History
One World Tribe and Buffalo Afrobeat Orchestra
[WORLD MUSIC] If the night before Thanksgiving is reputed to be the biggest bar night of the year around here, then the night after Thanksgiving has got to be the grooviest. High-ranking among the opportunities to sweat off some of the previous day’s consumption is the dual bill at Nietzsche’s on Friday, November 24: One World Tribe and Buffalo Afrobeat Orchestra—both great big ensembles comprising some of the region’s best musicians—will provide a full evening of relentlessly moving world music.
Michael Lee Jackson and Los Gatos Malos
[ROCK] Over decades, and without great fanfare, Buffalo’s Michael Lee Jackson has been building a resume that would make many musicians drool with envy: He has collaborated with Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan and Emerson Lake & Palmer’s Greg Lake, among other members of the rock firmament; he did a stint as a guitarist with 10,000 Maniacs; and his bands have comprised a who’s who of locally and even nationally renowned players.
The Nutcracker: Neglia Ballet and BPO at Shea's
[BALLET] Once again, Neglia Ballet Artists will team with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Shea’s Performing Arts Center to present The Nutcracker, Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic, for two performances at Shea’s: Saturday, November 25 at 7pm and Sunday, November 26 at 2pm.
The Steam Donkeys 2nd Annual 25th Anniversary and CD Release Show
[AMERICANA] Last year the Steam Donkeys marked the 40th anniversary of The Band’s Last Waltz, and the 25th anniversary of the formation of the Steam Donkeys themselves, with a local-star-studded show at the Sportsmen’s Tavern. It was so much fun that they’re doing it again, at the same terrific venue, on Black Friday, November 24. As an extra bonus, the Donkeys are releasing their fourth full-length album, Everchanging, their first since 2004’s Buffalo, NY.
Cornucopia: A Mini Poetry Festival
[LIT] We haven’t seen something quite like the Cornucopia Mini Poetry Festival, maybe ever? A one-day event with panel discussions, readings, and book fair all situated in the expansive and historic Barrel Factory on the grounds of Buffalo distiller Lakeward Spirits. Nine small press publishers (including the producers of our regular column, Peach Mag) from Buffalo and beyond will be on hand to share their publications as well as their experiences and work in panels and poetry readings.
Small Business Saturday
[SHOPPING] Black Friday? Eff that noise. Big box retailers declared war on independent retailers everywhere a generation ago, and today online retail looking to proclaim victory. As a small media business that survives largely on the support of small business, we encourage you to spread the love to your neighborhood retailers this holiday season and there’s no better kickstart to this effort than Small Business Saturday, found pretty much everywhere on the sane day that follows craziness of Black Friday.
