Spotlight: A Relative Term

Attention spans are shorter than ever. It’s hard to imagine how it must feel from up on a stage, especially since it’s plenty disconcerting just looking around in an audience… people busy on their phones, sifting through social media posts or blathering on to someone about anything other than the performance.

Spyro Gyra

[JAZZ] Formed in Buffalo in 1974, jazz funk band Spyro Gyra nearly 30 albums and has run through about half that many members, and they’re still out there rocking. Catch them at the Tralf Music Hall this Wednesday, November 15.

Super Diamond

[TRIBUTE] Super Diamond is a, you guessed it, Neil Diamond tribute band. The seven piece band comes to Kleinhans Music Hall for a special tribute show as part of the BPO Pops series this Saturday, November 11.

Tom Segura

[COMEDY] Comedian Tom Segura hates himself, but that’s ok because so many people love him. He hates himself for his awful small talk, his awkward fantasies, and his weight, but through all of that self loathing comes some seriously hilarious comedy. Segura isn’t a movie or TV star, he’s a hardcore stand up comic whose comedy specials, specifically Mostly Stories, are popular with his growing fanbase. The 38-year-old comedian comes to UB’s Center for the Arts on Saturday, November 11 for his No Teeth, No Entry tour.

Centerfold: Laylah Ali at Hallwalls

LAYLAH ALI,  an internationally exhibited artist originally from Buffalo, has a show of new drawings and paintings opening at Hallwalls (341 Delaware Avenue) on Friday, November 10, 8-11pm, with an artist talk at 8pm.

Chastity Brown

[ROCK] Country, soul, and gospel are the reference points for singer/songwriter Chastity Brown’s brand of smokey, driving, and soulful roots rock music. Five albums in and the “promising new voice” that NPR said she was in 2012 after the release of her album Back-Road Highways is delivering on that promise with this year’s Silhouette of Sirens, which features her latest single “Wake Up.” Check out Chastity Brown at Babeville’s 9th Ward this Tuesday, November 14.

Scarlet Begonias

[TRIBUTE} Buffalo has no shortage of Grateful Dead cover bands, but not all of them are as good as Scarlet Begonias, perhaps the newest band to join the fray. They’ll tackle the Dead’s extensive catalog, while adding in their own improvisational twists, this Saturday, November 11 with Duke’s Bohemian Grove Bar. Stay late and catch DBGB resident DJs Charlie the Butcher and the Incredible Scott Down if you’re in the mood to keep on dancing after the show.

Luenell

[COMEDY] Comedian Luenell has been on at least one of your favorite TV shows—from The Tracy Morgan Show to It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Black Jesus. Her brash comedy style tends to keep crowds in a state of constant laughter during her stand up routines and she never backs down. You can catch her at Helium Comedy Club for six shows this Thursday, November  9 through Sunday, November 12.

Timber Timbre

[INDIE] There’s something dark yet danceable to Timber Timbre’s latest album, Sincerely, Future Pollution. The Montreal-based indie rock band headed over to France to catch the right vibe for this noir-funky new album, the follow up to their more twangy, westerly facing 2014 release, Hot Dreams. Both records have what the Guardian called a “Lynchian” (as in David Lynchian”) feel to them, with dark corners, moody interludes, and cinematic pans throughout.

A Tribute to the Tragically Hip with Road Apples

[TRIBUTE] In mid-October, iconic Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie passed away after a battle with brain cancer. If you’ve been reliving all of the Hip’s hits in since then, you’re not the only one. The Road Apples have perfected the art of covering the Hip, so if you need to hear some of your favorite songs live one more time, check out this authentic Canadian Tragically Hip cover band at Buffalo Iron Works on Friday, November 10.

Dirty Heads

[ROCK] The Dirty Heads make what some call alternative rock, but is really closer these days to straight up pop-reggae music. Theres also a kind of jam band kind of aspect to it, there’s a hip hop thing going on, and there’s a humorous aspect to it too—as evidenced by the band’s ridiculous video for “Vacation” featuring Principal Belding from Saved by The Bell.

The Aces

[INDIE] If you’re looking for something cheap and cool to do on a Friday night, then here ya go. The Aces are a buzzingindie rock band—they’ve opened for Portugal. The Man and played at a bunch of noteworthy venues around the country recently—and they’re lined up to play at the Tralf on Friday, November 10 as part of Alternative Buffalo 107.7’s “Low Dough Show” series. That means that if you get your ticket ahead of time, it’ll only cost you $1.07. You can’t really beat that and you’ll have some extra money for beer.

Nietzsche's Folkfest

[FOLK] For the second year, Nietzsche’s will celebrate all things folk music with their Folkfest. This year’s headliner is Jonathan Richman, a folk musician who many might know from the proto-new wave band Modern Lovers. For more on him, check out our preview of his show—which is a separately ticketed event. Here, however, we want to highlight a few of the local and regional acts playing this four day festival.
