Last Minute Gifts: Books, Trivia, and Other Ideas You'll Thank Us For
The gift of a book flatters both the receiver and the giver, of course, and it’s also a visit to a local bookseller is also a great, last-minute way to check names off your end-of-year gift-giving list. In a single stop at one of the city’s fine bookshops—Talking Leaves, Rust Belt, Queen City Comics, West Side Books, Gutter Pop Comics, Second Reader, top name just a few independent retailers—you can pretty much find something for anyone.
Here are a few choices to consider, all by local authors, all published in the last year. Find a longer list at dailypublic.com.
Looking Backward: St. Patrick’s R.C. Church
The Fight for Inclusionary Zoning
Activists React to AG's Investigation of Buffalo Police
The Night of the Hunter
The Night of the Hunter (1955), the final selection in Alex Weinstein’s five-film noir series at the Dipson Eastern Hills Cinema, isn’t only a celebrated classic; it’s an example of a film that was too good. Directed and co-written (with James Agee) by the distinguished actor Charles Laughton, it was met with high praise by luminaries like Francois Truffaut, who feared it was too accomplished and unusual. “It will probably be Laughton’s single experience as a director,” he wrote. As it was. It took decades for it to be appreciated.

Shalom to the Dome
[HOLIDAY] This might be exactly the type of holiday party you’ve been looking for this season. Duke’s Bohemian Grove Bar will celebrate the holidays “Jewish style” with their annual Shalom to the Dome Party this Tuesday, December 19. The party will feature special drinks like the Manischewitz Manhattans and Schmaltz Beers and you can epect to hear a certain Adam Sandler song played on repeat too. And since it’s Duke’s there’ll be a complimentary buffet with some themed specials like pastrami and matzo ball soup. Happy Hanukkah!
Three Birds and A Pipitone
[FOLK] Four talented female singer/songwriters will take over Babeville’s Ninth Ward for a special concert this Friday, December 15 dubbed Three Birds and A Pipitone. Gibson will keep the crowd nice and warm in the meantime, so make sure to come out and return the favor.
Brendan Schaub
[COMEDY] Brendan Schaub is a bunch of things. He’s a podcastor, a former pro football player, and a retired martial artist, but he comes to Buffalo this weekend as a stand up comedian. Catch Schaub at Helium Comedy Club where he’ll perform five shows this Thusrday, December 14 through Saturday, December 16.
First Ward, Soul Butchers, and Bold Folly
[INDIE] A pretty eclectic line up of indie rock bands is set for the Tudor Lounge this weekend. This show runs of the spectrum of rock experimentation, from First Ward’s Radiohead-esque rock, to the Soul Butcher’s funk-punk, and Bold Folly’s psychedelia. Don’t miss this solid line up, Saturday, December 16.
