We've Lost Control: A Tribute to Joy Division
[TRIBUTE] If there is a band that deserves tribute, it’s Joy Division. A band that spawned a million wannabes, their trajectory was halted after the suicide of iconic frontman Ian Curtis. Nonetheless, their two records 1979’s Unknown Pleasures and 1980s Closer have become touchstones for a variety of scenes from post-punk to industrial, pop, and indie rock.
DTCV
[INDIE] Here are some interesting facts about DTCV: guitarist James Greer is a former senior editor at Spin magazine, as well as a former member of of the lauded indie rock band Guided by Voices. His band, DTCV brings together dreamy indie guitar-rock with French pop ideals, presumably brought to the table by the other half of the duo, French musician Lola G.
Record Store Day
[VINYL] When asked by the Record Store Day people about the importance of independent record stores, Fat Mike of NOFX said, “If it wasn’t for independent record stores, I would be a San Fernando valley real estate agent.” This is a statement that would probably be true of many of your favorite artists, especially though who came to prominence during the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. For record stores, Record Store Day is bigger than Christmas, as each store ships in a payload of surprise records—all Record Store Day exclusives, some rarer than others.
Palberta
[PUNK] The beauty of Palberta is the conveyed impression that they just don’t give a shit if it sounds tight or not. Beyond lo-fi (it’s no-fi), this trio emulates a punk vibe that’s earnestly gritty but balances bits of hilarious parody along the way (the incredulous tone that delivers the line “Hey, Dude, c’mon—you don’t even know where the pharmacy is?!” and the faux-core bark in new Hot on the Beach EP’s opener “The Weekend” are stunning examples).
Pentimento
[INDIE] If Pentimento reminds of something you can’t quite discern, you’re probably thinking of early aughties radio when similar bands were king. Now we’re in revival mode, bringing back the emo/punk-pop aesthetic for a new run (and the word ‘pentimento’ refers to visible traces of an earlier painting below the one on top).
KillSwitch Engage
[METAL] 17 years on from KillSwitch Engage’s Boston-area beginnings, the recently released Incarnate finds the metalcore band sounding fully committed. 2013’s Disarm the Descent marked the return of original vocalist Jesse Leach, resulting in a tentative feeling disc, but Incarnate sounds sturdier and brims with renewed chemistry.
O'Brother
[ROCK] On “Slow Sin,” the brooding opener to Atlanta five-piece O’Brother’s impressive new Endless Light, frontman Tanner Merritt declares, ” …but you are acting like a brain-dead infant/Waiting in line for a chemical to fix it/Acting like a sickle-cell child with a death wish/When you are light, you are time, you are endless.” A sense of frustration and subdued rage bubbles just below the surface of the track and
BBQ & Brews Pairing Dinner
[FOOD] Wayno’s BBQ, Resurgence Brewery, and StepOutBuffalo.com have teamed up to put on one of the tastiest beer and barbecue nights Buffalo has ever seen this Tuesday, April 19 at Resurgence. Everyone in attendance will get a four course meal from Wayno’s, each paired with a specific beer from Resurgence. There will also be a cash bar that will feature beer, wine, cider, and more. Tickets for this first of its kind event are $40 and this does include tax and gratuity, but act fast because space is limited.
The Protomen
[ROCK] Hailing from Nashville, The Protomen are a rock/prog/concept band in the spirit of over the top 1970s/1980s bands and have been compared to Queen, Genesis, and Journey. WIRED has referred to them as “unmitigated awesomeness,” and MetalSucks has said that “The Protomen feature two of the best voices performing live today.” Currently working on Act III of their concept album series, the band recently released their single “This City Made Us,” and is expected to get back in the studio and finish the album soon.
