Friday Night Laughs featuring Yung Joc and Shawty Shawty

[COMEDY] The Friday Night Laughs comedy series at the Tralf Music Halls continues with two shows by comedian Yung Joc. A Benefit for Andrew Krawczyk

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] In December, the Buffalo music scene lost an essential piece when musician Andrew Krawczyk, also known as Neckbrace, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 24. Now, members of Buffalo’s electronic music scene have come together to host a benefit for the family of Krawczyk.

First Friday of 2017

[ART] With potentially seismic changes afoot in the global political fabric, there’s been a lot of talk on social media and over eggnog of getting more involved in local issues, local politics, and local economies. Our cultural expression—the things we feel in private and reveal in public—anchor us in this reality and participating in the local commerce of ideas and conversation bring us closer and make us stronger.

Friday Night Heavy: Rebel Scum, One Way Terror, and Behind Closed Doors

[HEAVY] Mohawk Place is hosting a new event series called Friday Night Heavy, in which they book punk, metal, and hardcore, for late night Friday shows. The first edition of the event, this Friday, January 6, features Buffalo punk-metal band Rebel Scum, thrash band One Way Terror, and from Germany, prog metal band Behind Closed Doors. Only $3.

Joe Machi

[COMEDY] Machi’s style is awkward, yet robotic, a combination that is surprisingly hilarious as he delivers his jokes in a loud monotone voice.

Warrior’s Call: The Fight to Stop the Dakota Access Pipeline

[ACTIVISM] In early December, as the weather grew colder and local law enforcement became increasingly belligerent in their treatment of protestors fighting the North Dakota Access Pipeline in Standing Rock, an astonishing thing happened: More than 4,000 US military veterans traveled to North Dakota to join Native protestors, to provide material support to them, to stand between them and law enforcement, and to draw attention to their cause.

Paul Kozlowski Quartet

[JAZZ] Multi-instrumentalist Paul Koslowski will be joined by David Adamczyk on violin, David Phillips on drums, and Benjamin Levitt on bass for a skillful presentation of music inspired by everything from hip hop to classical. Expect flourishes of flamenco music, as leader Koslowski brings his skill on Spanish guitar and accordion. The Paul Koslowski Quartert comes to Pausa Art House on Wednesday, January 11.

Emerson Drive

[ROCK] Canadian country-rockers Emerson Drive have survived no fewer than nine lineup changes in 20 years, a name change (they were formerly known as 12 Gauge), the suicide of a former guitarist, and at least four label shifts, most of which were the result of mergers and closings (rather than a byproduct of the group’s commercial performance, which has actually shown promise right along).

Casino for a Cause

[BENEFIT] Tickets aren’t cheap for this charity event, but the latest fundraiser from Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian and wife Bianca’s non-profit, the Bogo Bunch, has a very cool “step-back-in-time” motif. On Saturday, January 7, the Bogo Bunch will transform Town Ballroom into a version of its former self, the Town Casino, as the Bogo Bunch raises funds for the Buffalo Wellness Centers Juicer Fund and Roswell Park Cancer Institute. It’s a 1920s dudes-and-dames theme, so dress in cocktail attire or come in full-on flapper/gangster mode.

Fleuron Rouge 2017 Winter Hafla

[DANCE] Hafla is an Arabic term that means “get-together,” and innovative belly-dancing troupe Fleuron Rouge has made this shindig an annual Babeville tradition now for several years running. This year they’re joined by the ladies of Femme Noir and their special brand of fusion-burlesque, which pulls from jazz and hip-hop. The combined effect is bound to heat up a chilly Buffalo night, so don’t miss out of the hypnotic hip movement, Saturday, January 7 at Babeville’s Asbury Hall.
