This Week's Agenda from Loop Magazine
Spotlight: Buffalo Riverworks Brewery
Considering that Buffalo is the birthplace of the grain elevator and home to the world’s largest collection of them, the upcoming brewery at Buffalo RiverWorks could hardly be more fitting.
The brewing operation, which is expected to open by next spring, will be housed entirely in six grain silos that were recently painted to resemble a six pack of Labatt Blue, known colloquially as the silo six-pack.

This Week's Public Picks
Davina Sowers and the Vagabonds
[ROCK] I wouldn’t call Davina Sowers and the Vagabonds a throwback act, necessarily—their original music has enough contemporary flair—but their influences are obvious, from Fats Domino to Janis Joplin. Frontwoman Davina has gained comparisons to Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse, but the band also pride themselves on being able to cover music from the past 100 years in America. Get a little bit of old and new with Davina Sowers and the Vagabonds when they come to Buffalo Iron Works on Wednesday, January 18.
The Pietasters
[SKA] The Pietasters are famously all over the punk spectrum when it comes to their sound. The eight-piece band from Washington, DC, which formed in the early 1990s, has always been able to attract the punks, the skankers, the mods, and even some hardcore fans, too. The classic ska band will hopefully unite the punk scene under one roof this Saturday, January 14 when they come to Buffalo Iron Works with the Abruptors.
Canalside Chillabration
[FESTIVAL] Canalside has whipped up a solid lineup of festivities for their Chillabration winter festival. The all-ages festival will include a petting zoo, a Native American snow snake, ice sculptures, amusement rides, fire dancing, on-ice performances, a vendor market, and live music.
Continental Drifft, paris_monster, Spacey Stacey, and PizzaDoughnuts
[EXPERIMENTAL] If you’re looking for some experimental music this weekend, head over to Nietzsche’s this Saturday, January 14. The venue hosts four talented acts including experimental garage act paris_monster, Rochester acid rock gurus Continental Drifft, improv trio Spacey Stacey, and [insert high-pitched dinosaur noises here] PizzaDoughnuts.
StarWars Cantina Party: A Dreamland Fundraiser
[PARTY] Dreamland transforms into the Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine for one night. DJ Kylo Ron will provide the tunes, perhaps some cuts by Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes, while the folks at Dreamland provide the “crazy atmosphere.” The party happens this Saturday, January 14. Funds generated at the party go to help cover the cost of a new PA system at Dreamland. Star Wars or general sci-fi costumes are encouraged.
The Horszowski Trio
[CLASSICAL] Taking their name from the Polish-American pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski, the Horszowski Trio aim down the same path that the pianist, who died at the age of 101, did. Violinist Jesse Mills, cellist Raman Ramakrishnan, and pianist Rieko Aizawa will play pieces by Beethoven, Wuorinen, and Medelssohn, pieces that no doubt fascinated the original Horszowski, when the trio comes to Kleinhans Music Hall on Tuesday, January 17.
Caroline Rhea
[COMEDY] Caroline Rhea is one of the most well-known female comedians around. Her credits include her own daytime talk show, The Caroline Rhea Show, as well as roles on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and the Disney animated show Phineas and Ferb. The 52-year-old comedian brings her standup comedy act to Buffalo’s Helium Comedy Club for five shows this Thursday, January 12 through Saturday, January 14.
Carina and the Six String Preacher
[JAZZ] Wife and husband duo Carina and the Six String Preacher are keeping the Buffalo’s jazz scene fresh with their latest record Why You So Wild, Crocodile. Their influences seem limitless, from 1960s jazz to indie surf rock, creating a unique sonic vibe in concert. They’ll play the Pausa Art House on Saturday, January 14.
Blackalicious
Party with the Animals
[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] Things get going at 10pm for this Hematone Productions shindig at The Waiting Room this Saturday, January 14, which invites you to coax your inner animal out to play for a mere $15. Come dressed as your favorite member of the animal kingdom and writhe to the live DJ alongside the Hem-tome cage dancers. Ms. Ginger Applebottems will provide a special performance, and there’s a $50 gift certificate from Third Eye Tattoo that’ll go to the best outfit.
Shining Star: A Tribute to Earth, Wind and Fire
[TRIBUTE] Given Earth Wind and Fire’s epic sound—the expanded rhythm section, the brass, the high-harmony falsetto singing—paying tribute to the legendary R&B outift seems like a task that might be better left alone.
Malarchuk, Dirt War, Governess, and The Tines
[ROCK] On Saturday, January 14, the Tralf Music Hall opens its doors for a lineup of metal-tinged local indie goodness, featuring the Sabbath-influenced sounds of Malarchuk alongside considerably heavier sludge from Dirt War. Also on hand will be the more complex and proggy tones of the Tines, and some straightforward, edgy rock from Governess.
Standup for Planned Parenthood
Do you stand with Planned Parenthood? These folks do, and they’re asking you to come out for a night of hilarious local standup while supporting that great cause at a time when it could really use the help.
