Bill Murray, Jan Volger & Friends: New Worlds

[PERFORMANCE] At the age of 67, Bill Murray is still diving into unknown territory. Of course his fans know him as a prolific and iconic comedian who has appeared in dozens of movies from Ghostbusters to Lost in Translation, but his latest project, New Worlds, is new to both him and his fans. Joined by cellist Jan Vogler, Murray reads passages from classic American literature such as Huckleberry Finn. As the story goes, Vogler and Murray met on a trans Atlantic flight on which the two struck up a friendship.

John Witherspoon

[COMEDY] You probably recognize 75-year-old comedian John Witherspoon from his appearances in the Friday movies and more recently the Adult Swim series Black Jesus, and older fans might remember him from the Incredible Hulk television show from the 1970s. He’s worked with everyone from David Letterman, whom he considers a good friend, to Eddie Murphy in Boomerang, and with Will Smith on his classic tv show Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Michale Graves

[PUNK] Though Danzig cancelled his Buffalo show a few weeks ago, you can still catch a former Misfits frontman when the always ghastly Michale Graves comes to Mohawk Place for a show on Wednesday, October 11. At the age of 19, Graves led the reformation period of the band, taking over where Glenn Danzig left off. Graves was never a Danzig wannabe, however, adding more of a metal edge to the band—and of course his iconic haircut. Among Misfits fans, Graves has actually given Danzig a run for his money as far as fan favorite frontmen go.

Who’s Bad: The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience

[TRIBUTE] One of the more popular Michael Jackson tribute shows, Who’s Bad: The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience, returns to Buffalo for the second time this year. More than just an impersonation act, Who’s Bad is as close to a fully produced Michael Jackson concert as you’ll be able to find in 2017. This is the longest running tribute to the King of Pop on tour right now, and it’s pretty comprehensive—reaching back to the Jackson 5 days and covering everything through the end of his career.

Chuck Mosley

[PUNK] Chuck Mosley has been the frontman of two popular bands—first the alternative rock band Faith No More, from 1983 to 1988, and then of the pioneering punk band Bad Brains from 1990 to 1992. Though he wasn’t the most famous singer of either band, he brought his own distinct brand of punk rock energy to both groups. Since then he’s performed in and launched a variety of projects including the funk-metal band Cement, and V.U.A. (later known as Chuck Mosley and VUA).

American Music at the BPO

[MUSIC] This weekend’s program at the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is a celebration of Americana: some Leonard Bernstein, some Phillip Glass. The centerpiece, “Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland, may contain the most compelling opening bars of composed music in the American canon, and, tellingly, the first bars are silence, followed by a brash flood of sound: the sound of the many and the so, so much. Tt would be anachronism to call it a prescription, but the elegiac brass and strings should burn away all divisions. Maybe it should be our national anthem.

M&T Dance Series: Lehrer Dance

[DANCE] Buffalo-based professional dance company Lehrer Dance will kick off the M&T Bank Dance Series at UB Center for the Arts this Friday, October 6. The show fill feature two world premieres: “Rhapsody,” which is described as a “fun, full company piece,” which brings together new and classic jazz styles, and “Sirenic,” a more emotionally intense piece—along with a selection of audience favorites.

Yes featuring ARW

Well, then… this is sort of unusual. Now some 60 years into the history of rock music and it’s not unheard of to have two different version of the same band on the road, featuring different members from various incarnations along the way. But to have them both using the same name is pretty rare.

Demetri Martin

[COMEDY] Comedian Demetri Martin is the king of the unexpected punchline. Sometimes all he really gives his audience is the punchline. “Pets are animals that are not delicious,” he blurts out during his Netflix stand up special Demetri Martin: Live (At the Time). “I have an L shaped sofa. Lowercase,” he says, before going on to a seven second bit on soap scum. The comedian, who has appeared on the Daily Show isn’t all just rapid one liners, though.

Sugar City: Folks I Know

[ART] I’m old. And when I say old, I don’t mean what you easy, shit-heeled hipsters say about old. This is not 40. This is pushing 50. I am also vain. So when I hear that Sugar City is hosting a show called Folks I Know of portraits gleaned from “the eyes of seven active Instagrammers in Buffalo,” and I know every one of those instant-grabbers, there better be a picture of me. Or, there better not be. Either way, you lose. And either way, I’m going on Friday, October 6, to find out.
